That link at the bottom of the article concerning weather related records is worth checking out. I am a little surprised that so few weather extremes (worldwide, hemispheric of per continent) have occurred in the last couple decades.

That is one beautiful wave, where but probably not so beautiful if it crashes onshore in a tourist zone.

you're a little south of the area of the reported buoy but the same ocean. that north Atlantic is nasty! Davey Jones locker is littered with ships that went up against it

Seems like people who believe global warming is happening are far less likely to use a single incident to prove global warming than people who deny global warming is happening are to use a single incident to prove that it is not happening.

The wave is awe inspiring, and you only undercut that awe by using it as a dig at global warming.

There is not a stitch of global warming today in Lubbock, much less this weekend. LOL

Happy New Year and Merry Christmas ol' fart!

Yeah you Northern folks are in for it this year, this weekend being no slouch at putting the deep freeze on all over the north.

Sines, Portugal, 02/1979; 40-ton (each) concrete dolos (twisted ''H'' 3-D shape) breakwater destroyed by persistent hours of pounding by 11+ meter breaking waves. It was about 1 year old. As bad as the north Atlantic is, I bet the Southern Ocean is the champ, especially in the Drake Passage.

Re: That's a Wave!

Just north of the Canary Islands heading for Gibraltar, '74, in our 86 foot schooner under power at night. Suddenly I saw what I didn't want to believe, a breaking wave that was about three times the hight of our mast. I turned directly into it and it rolled over us. The boat remained stable even though we were totally under water. I backed off the throttle, water was spraying in around the wheelhouse door and we were a bit nervous but... After what seemed like an eternity we started to slowly surface. The wheelhouse came out of the water first but the rest of the boat was still under. What a sight. In time the whole boat returned to normal operation and upon inspection the only thing wrong was a lost deck mop that had not been properly secured but for the rest all was perfect. It was a damn good piece of boat.

It may have been a damn good boat, but at least part of the credit goes to good seamanship. Having everything properly stowed for sea when underway can be a matter of life and death, though it's pretry common to see boats that don't see it that way.
