ovality control in y- ring to skirt joint, pressure vessel manufacturing

Respected all

i come across the problem during fabrication of pressure vessel.

Actual problem: The ovality of y-ring and skirt having large difference.

due to that i can't able to make weld setup.

would you tell me what should i do.

Diamention:

ovality in skirt: 15 -20 mm

ovalty in y-ring : 1-3 mm

material of skirt : SA 516.

dia of skirt: 3000mm

THK: 50mm

Height : 5000mm

skirt is being rolled

y- ring is being forged.

I do not have solution to your problem at this time though I will mull it over a bit and return.

In the meanwhile I strongly encourage you to cross check your component to component manufacturing and quality control specs and tighten accordingly (or loosen).

okay my knee jerk response. Heat and hammer.

The size of your component at 50mm thickness is a limiting factor. My experience does not lend to that size though I imagine our typical situation magnified.

Someone can offer up something else but what comes to mind is a physical, imperfect, labor intensive bout of heat and hammer. Orient and mark the mating components and get at it. If non-critical and the forging can be manipulated a wee bit then there is a bit of give there. I however would not want to wreck the forging. Chain straps and 'come-alongs' come to mind as well.

In your pressure vessel, you need to be round to within 10% of the diameter for welding. The problem you are having is not unusual, you need to create a round up ring. That is a fixture that is round when closed, hinged on one end and has a large clamp on the other then. Place the round up ring on your pressure vessel and close the clamp, this should round your vessel, weld the end cap and then remove your round up ring.

After reading your post, I wonder how much English you understand and if you will be able to follow these instructions.

Forgive my ignorance, but the device you mentioned will suit 50mm by mechanical means, no hydraulics, no nothing. Direct clamping pressure? If so I have some guys that need this device.

2" thick over 118" dia.

Oh Man, your right, I didn't catch that. 50mm, What is he building that needs a 2" wall?? That will support over 3,000psi. ????

I m very glad you see your reply. I guess i was too trying for similar approch to make ovality currection. Sir , i too did some for calculation to find too how much load it need to apply. i was planning to apply load point. sir , may i know, is there any theory available for this kind of physics.

My concept was : to apply point load from outter side of skirt, on certain point.

is there any theory available for such kind of phenomenon. i am particularly intersted to know how much deflection could occur at that point and what will the value of stress & strain.

I had done calculation by using Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain but not got feasible result.

All of our digesters start out with a 2" wall, 13' diameter 40' length and are rated for 175 MAWP. I suspect the extra wall thickness may be corrosion allowance. it is possible to mechanically align the pcs. by utilization of fit up "dogs and wedges" and it is done allot in the field. The ASME code gives out of roundness tolerances but in the real world you may have to live with making the pcs work and trying to do better the next time you would fabricate.
