Touch sensitive screens.

08/13/2007 8:05 PM

Hello

I'm looking to buy some touch sensitive screens.

Could someone possibly tell me please how I would configure/ program them to have the icons I want on the screen or would the engineers at the companies that sell them do that for me, based on my specs?

Also, how do I integrate the touch sensitive screen (with the commands it receives from its users) with the PC and it's program please?

Sorry if these are stupid questions.

This info would really help me.

Thanks

Phil

I used to do work for a company called Carroll Touch. I don't know if they are still active or not.

It's been a loooong time.

touch technology can be found here though.

I suggest you do not just buy them.

Ask the supplier or manufacturer to provide some training in their use. If they're good, they'll throw in the training for free.

Alternatively, you can ask them to program them for you, as you mentioned, based on your inputs. Problem with that is, if you need to make changes or additions, you'll have to call them again ($$$).

Teaching you how to program them here in this forum is an extremely difficult and impractical task.

Phil,

you should deliver some more informations about your application because there are several possible concepts.

1. What about the contents of your screen. If you need high resolution icons (possibly coloured) then its completely different from fixed icons placed on the screen which do not change and are only omitted by program. High res graphic screens are fully programmable and are no "lo cost" devices while for high volume applications often fixed content displays are used - these are custom specific and made to your requirements by the display manufacturer.

2. What kind of interface do you need ? Is it a parallel (8 or 16 bit-)bus or something like VGA or RS232?

3. Your decision should include the environmental specs like temperature range, humidity and perhaps should it be vandal-proof, too ?
(I mean not you, but your customers ;-) ....... )

4. Which resolution do you need? There are models with a fixed coarse resolution (mostly digital) and others with finest resolution (mostly resistive or capacitive) which is needed if, per example, someone has to underwrite with a pen on the screen.

5. You can buy nearly ready and easily configurable displays with some assistance by software delivered by the display manufacturer but I think this makes only sense for development and lo volume quantities. Otherwise you can simply program the displays like writing to a RAM and the touch screen requests are similar to keyboard routines.

Regards Uwe

Your reply was to my mind the absolute best and most accurate that I have read in this Blog and should help the person concerned a lot.

Well done and thanks from me too....

(I still have a few more to read though!)

Hi phil

you could try http://www.cybertouch.com (US) they provide several solutions. pre built models and kits (touch sensitive film) with usb control. Just load the soft and plug it in (sort of) I don't know the cost but the product is ok - my Co. rents them for AV, exhibitions etc. and they seem stable so far.

We've used Xycom/Proface industrial touch screens which plug into PCs much in the same way as a standard monitor does. Touchscreen connectivity is via a serial port on your PC. Once the drivers are correctly installed your fingers work the Windows (for example) screen interface much as a mouse would have.

We use Custom Video Display (CVD http://www.custdisp.com/ ) screens. As in the previous post, we hook them up to Windows XP computers (through USB) and after installing the drivers, the screen basically replaces the mouse. When you touch a position on the screen, the cursor moves to your finger and left-clicks wherever your finger happens to be. All our software uses standard buttons and can be run using the mouse as well.
