Keyboard Mystery

01/31/2017 12:39 PM

I've worn the label off the N key, and eventually the M key, of nearly every computer keyboard I've ever had. I doubt either key is used quite as often as a few other consonants (R, S, T for example) and the vowels E and A. Why don't those keys lose their labels? Any ideas? This has happened with ThinkPads, assorted Dell and HP equipment, and whatever brand of spare keyboards my husband comes up with.

I know this question isn't up to the usual level of seriousness we've come to expect from this forum, but at least it's different.

I've ruined several boards, an exhaustive review points to a glass of cabernet next to the keyboard as the main offender

My dog knocked a glass of no-name red wine onto one of my ThinkPads (I was working for IBM so IBM owned the TP). I mopped up as best I could, got out my hair dryer, and crossed my fingers. Keyboard worked better than before; I suppose all the dust and food crumbs came out.

Re: Keyboard mystery

Does your keyboard have caps that come off easily and can't be replaced? We kept Mr. Best in Show's son's cat while the son was in college. Waldo did his best to help with software updates and making donations to feline-related causes. However his claws would get caught in the crevices between keycaps and pull them off. When this happened to my IBM-issued ThinkPad (a different one than the one that got wine spilled on it) I thought I'd be in trouble ... nope, Support sent me a new keyboard no questions asked. These things should be cat-proof!

My grandson spilt a drink on his laptop ages ago & decided to pull all of the caps off so that he could clean it. Obviously he didn't make any record of where the caps should go back.

No, Mr. Thomas Q. Kitty (Q is for quick), learned to type touch screen early on, bypasses the keyboard (for the most part), although we have sightings of him dancing on the keys.

Assuming you are right handed, the right index finger is probably the strongest finger (thumbs don't hit any key except the space bar) you have. The finger is stronger pulling in compared to pushing out. Add in a tendency to rub rather than hit straight and you have an explanation.

I don't know if it is right, but it is an explanation.

I don't touch type, I tend to use both index fingers & thumbs when I type. I am right handed but the only legend worn away on my work keyboard is the 'A' which is the furthest L.H. key.

Perhaps I'm just weird.

Must be the finger you poke your ear with. The wax dissolves the key marking.

Watching habits might solve the problem!

Re: Keyboard Mystery

02/01/2017 5:51 AM

I have the same problem and with a few keys mainly because of how I type. For the A, L, and S keys, it doesn't matter how short I keep my nails. I keep our little bottle of appliance touch up paint in a desk drawer, and when a letter wears away, I paint it back on with a toothpick. That usually lasts a few months. I am cheap with these sorts of things. When nothing more can be squeezed from the tube of toothpaste, I cut it in half with a scissors near the end, and swab one more brushing out of the stub. Maybe that should be a thread. "You might be a cheapskate if you..."

In some keyboards the glyphs aren't printed on, they're moulded-in, an integral part of the key. Double-shot injection moulded. In order to wear them out, you'd have to wear the key-top all the way through. Most keyboards I've used are made with these kind of keys and I've never had any problems with wear. Maybe the long-term solution is to get a better-quality keyboard?

Those keyboards are generally backlit and more expensive. Although they are nice, who wants to spend $70.00 on a keyboard when you can get one for $7.00 (unless you are a gamer)? In this case you get what you pay for, and pad printed keys will wear a lot faster than double molded ones.

The keyboard in your picture appears to be back-lit, are those not LED's in front of the actuators? I came up with that price because I was recently looking for a back-lit keyboard and the Logitech that I liked was $70.00+. I decided I didn't need one that badly, and bought a $9.00 one from Target that works just fine but has printed buttons. Guess I never looked for anything in between.

That picture illustrates the construction of such keys and just happened to turn up in a google search. It is not my keyboard. My current keyboard is that of an aging Dell Inspiron N4110 laptop. Its keys are also constructed this way but, given the age of the computer, I dare not pry them off.

Never tried a "keyboard condom;" I've seen them, but I've never used one. No, my company just keeps buying the cheap keyboards and mice. There are at least 3 brand new ones in the supply closet at all times. They'll spend 2k on a new laptop for me with a 24" monitor but I have to use the 2 for $10.00 keyboards and mice. Oh well, it's not my money.

I do a daily fight with the auto correct system on my browsers. It's rare for me to not make a post and not see it reword (< thinks 'reward' fits better for example) or rewrite something even if it's both spelled and grammatically correct.

To be honest I don't know of a forum where the discussion of this issue with the new grammar and spell check systems hasn't came up many time over in the last year or so for the exact reason you state.

Yes, but when did spell-checkers start inserting whole lines of text?

Pretty cool when you exchange two letters and look how your wife reacts to her bad typing....

My thoughts (without reading all other posts) is that it is due to friction. Pay attention to how your finger hits the keys that get worn. If your finger tends to slide just a bit on those more than others, that could explain it.

I have touch typed since a typing class in school but I tend to wear the ones my fingers rest on. I have caught myself tapping the keys lightly when thinking of what to write or rubbing a finger across to find the raised dimples that indicate the F and J keys.

I never use the dimples. I just start typing, and if words come out, so much the better.

I usually wear out the backspace key. LOL

Here's what you need: An Optimus-Maximus keyboard where each key-top is a little OLED graphic display whose appearance (and function) you can change under software control. Better win the Lottery, tho - these originally sold for $1600.

Amazon lists them but no price and no idea when they'll be back in stock.

Yes for $1600 I would want a lot of features such as a fancy button on my keyboard dedicated to Porn (three buttons down and one to the right on the example picture you posted).

Why yes, I would live another free 745MB of storage (bottom left hand side button).

Yes, but then you have to enter the address into a web browser, very inconvenient. Same with trying to use Siri and then filtering the responses.

Ahh, progress.

'Any ideas?'

Sure. Lots.

Right off the bat (and I'm surprised this hasn't already been mentioned) nothing really starts with an 'n'. You must be gnashing these at other times.

Also of note 'm' is the first letter in most long sentences. Obviously 'm' gets used many cases.

You say, "nothing really starts with an 'n', then you follow that with, "Also of note"?

There is a lot of sheite here that starts with "n", and it ain't pretty.

Do I gotta drag out the encyclopedia?

No, a lot of sheite does not start with an 'n'. There isn't 'n' anywhere in it.

Another interesting fact; hardly anything ends with a 'g'.

Thanks for playing.

Nothing really does start with an 'n', Lyn. Really.

Nothing.

You are correct that 'note' also begins with an 'n'.

Pretty sure I would get you.

I have a similar problem, Same letters. But also this is a cheap backlit keyboard here, and the Black is what wears out so it is just a blue glowing blob where the letter should be.

But what is also interesting is, directly under the "N" & "M" on the spacebar is an area that is worn out also.

Get yourself a model M. They are still being made and have molded-in lettering.

Thanks to everyone who's offered ideas and suggestions. I honestly didn't expect such a large response. I'll get Mr. Best in Show to take a look tonight. We have a Dymo label maker and some appliance touch-up paint ... not sure which approach I'll take.

We have a brand-new keyboard for the laptop we both use (e.g. not my personal laptop). Will have to see how long before the N wears off.

Agree with Lyn.

Does that then become a laps-top, or a laptops, device?

After further review, it turns out the Thomas cat only logged into my computer on a ghost profile known only as "dog". I think he may have been posting anonymously to CR4.

Lucky me, I got all 20,000 salacious and solicitous emails back.

Trimming these, particularly the index finger of the right hand, may yield dividends:
