This is big news. Aluminum is way cheaper than lithium also.

Have you found any other links to their published work on this? I would like all the details about the electrolyte, graphics about electrode construction, in essence everything I need to know in order to make one for my own testing.

I would like to be able to charge up such batteries with thermally charged cells called phonon cells. Then one could have power for XMTR, sensor, or other devices like smart mines out in the far remote field, totally concealed under sand if need be, at least the larger parts.

What for? That sounds dangerous?

I would not deploy any such device as a mine, but the military might, especially if they need area denial weaponry. They already have very sophisticated technology, but maybe these could be field deployed longer, then the batteries finally run down after the phonon cells stop functioning (in about ten years).

The peaceful uses in remote areas far outweigh the weapon system ones.

Not running off flatulence. Phonon cells rely on dissimilar metals to set up a difference in potential between the various zones in the mixture of crystalline solids (that may melt and intermingle to some extent) between the electrodes. Different materials have different band energies, allowing some (albeit low) conduction to take place.

Typical output resistance is in the tens or even hundreds of Ohms, although I made one larger cell that had an output R of 3 Ohms in bright sunlight (heat results in lowering the resistance).

Go out in the woods with a case of beer. Build a fire to make some charcoal. Drink the beer and save the cans. Soon you can have everything you need to make some batteries.

If you fill the empty cans with twigs and toss them in the fire they will outgas leaving the cans filled with charcoal. brilliant!

charcoal and intercalated aluminum in graphite are perhaps not the same thing. I would not expect top flight performance from a gutta percha golf ball, though.

Now you are being just a cynic. I expect these batteries to compare favorably with Li+, since they do put Aluminum back on the metal anode during re-charge. Aluminum is trivalent, which tends toward increasing the output current, although volts may be slightly less.
