Firstly, anyone who starts using a Windows operating system in the first 2 years after release, MUST ACCEPT THAT HE IS A MODERN DAY EXPLORER OF THE UNKNOWN, he must also have a really great sense of humour. I trust that you have this quality!!

If I had to buy a PC today and it was bundled with Vista, I would remove the Vista and install WinXP Pro. In our family, there are 3 Laptops and several PCs, all have this OS. The first install of XP Pro, (after I was given it on my office PC and had time to get used to it), at home was when XP was already 2 years old and was the SP1 version!!

If you don't like the Vista install procedure, then do the following, (the next time anyway), install a second hard disk, buy backup software that will make a mirror image of your system disk and store it on the 2nd disk. Buy a modern tape drive and back up both disks using something simple like Norton Ghost. Do this regularly, keep the copies or at least the last 3.

All this is not cheap, but I can restore my C. disk in about an hour after starting the restore, with no input from me. Otherwise its about a 2 day job!!

Having all my data on the D: disk (with me its a 650GB RAID System) means that my data is there even after a system crash. (I had IBM hard drives for a couple of years, then you know all about system crashes!! Thank God they got out of that business and I will NEVER EVER BUY even a Toilet roll with the name IBM on it!!!!).

Good antivirus software, good firewalls (1 hard, 1 soft) and plenty of updates....run Malware software, several types, at least once a week.....

Anyone running with a single disk is just looking for trouble.

Anyone running with a new OS is just looking for trouble.

Anyone running without full backups is just looking for trouble.

....and don't tell me you don't have the money, because if you don't, you have to live with the reinstall process when your cheap set up sucks in a virus occasionally........as it will in todays environment!!!

Laugh please and go do it!!!

"You pays your money and you makes your choice". Old British saying!!!

You may have to repair your registry files. Do you have a piece of software like Registry Mechanic? It may find a lot of residual damage in your registry. Just make sure it's compatible with Vista!!!

There's also Microsoft's RegClean, which is an automatic scan-and-fix routine, a freeware, to be downloaded here.

It's not application (or installation) specific, and it was not designed for 2000 XP or Vista, but I used it anyway, every time i got the illegal-operation crap coming, and in most cases, it works.

You might want to stay clear of the Microsoft registry cleaner... It just unhooked my email from my browser, and I had a nasty time getting them back together. Nothing's perfect.

Took notice and will act accordingly. I only used it once or twice a year to get rid of those "Your program has performed an illegal operation, and will be arrested until trial..."

"Your program has performed..." ... As if...

reminiscent of "Tron" anyone?

This sounds like when I upgraded to XP. Suddenly a lot of my most favorite programs didn't work! Then I got this message that said "If you purchase new software, be sure that it says compatible with Windows XP." The unwanted shopping spree was on!

If you get a registry tool from a web site or your local computer store, make sure it says "compatible with Windows Vista." Sorry I can't be of more help.

Just one more thing - more for me than you... I am amazed that the hackers had the knowledge and ability to create Trojan Horses and Viruses this quickly on a new operating system. Makes one wonder who they are and how closely they're attached to Microsoft.

I agree, and it sucks that they're so smart.

Why don't you go to the Registry Mechanic web site and ask them when and if they'll be ready for Vista. My guess is where there's a buck involved, asses move quickly.

If you end up re-installing, follow my advice and buy a copy of WinXP Pro, install that.

If you do it on a new hard disk, all your data will be available on the old C: disk....

Make sure that you install good firewalls and Anti Virus software, in fact follow my post #1....

In about 2+ years, Vista will be better and safer than XP and you can update your PC to it safely!!

A friend of mine that works for a memory company told me that your problem could be caused by bad memory. He suggested that you go here and get the latest version of "Memtest." It's free and will tell you whether you have a bad stick or not.

Good luck!

....you are maybe forgetting that Vista was available as a Beta download for more than a year before its release, so the bad boys had a great time playing with it....

Also, that no matter what MS says, Vista has a lot of XP still in it, which had a lot of Win2K which came from WinNT etc etc etc....they did not write it all from scratch, I just don't believe that....

Its a bit like a woman who goes and gets a face lift from time to time....

....but underneath........!

Re: registry files recovery (vista )

Seemingly contrary to what I have written before, but my personal impression is that Vista is in better shape at this stage of its life that XP was at the same age......or any other of most of the previous MS offerings. I think they did their homework well.

But anyone, like me for example, that use a lot of different hard and software, find it rather depressing to find that there are still lots of missing hardware drivers and that software needs to be updated, often at my cost....!

Why do I need to change, XP is still fully supported and still in continous developement, the hard & software manufacturers know it well and everything (well most everything) works straight out of the box, so to say.....

The top versions of Vista are far too expensive! (sorry, ALL versions of Vista are far too expensive!)

I personally see no reason to even to start thinking about a change yet.....
