Noise Map: Enter Your Zip or Zoom In to Look At How You Sound

03/30/2017 9:23 AM

This isn't the first noise map, but it's pretty neat.

Where I live I'm able to see three flight paths into Ohare airport, but they are still way up and out. I can hear some of the planes if they are exceptionally low or taking a lesser used route and I really enjoy it. When I do hear a plane it's more of a white noise compared to what people near the airport deal with.

Anyhow. It's pretty neat to see what you've been hearing.

When I'm out in the country I'm amazed at how much of a presence highway noise can be. You really need to get off the beaten path to get away from it.

What's it like where you live?

compare that to ...

Interesting stuff--in my area all the noise is on the roads, especially interstates. Interesting too how the airports form a little noisy cross which I assume are the approach/takeoff routes.

The hurricanes generally rapidly lose their punch over land....and the possibility of a hurricane threatening both my location and that of Disney is really long odds...we only get a hurricane here about once every 100 years....and nothing above a cat 2 in the last 100 years....that one last year was the first one I ever saw...and it went around us...

Speaking of hurricanes...

Upriver from the town where my fiancee lives, one area received 800 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. That's over 31 inches of rain in one day, or 2/3 of the area's annual rainfall in a single 24-hour period. This from what's left of Cyclone Debbie. Further up the Australian coast a waterspout sucked a 5-foot (1.5 m) bull shark out of the ocean and dumped it on somebody's lawn.

That's good that you have a back up. And yeah.. the actual odds are very low for a direct hit with damage. It's like winning the lottery in reverse.

Blank screen where I live. Nearest point of any considerable noise to me is ~2 miles away.

surf? silence? what's that?

I try to enjoy both of those as often as possible. In the city I've learned to tune out the "environmental" noises..

This one place I enjoy going to has many acres of cedar, birch, aspen, maple etc.. if i'm looking for someone i stand still and close my eyes for a few moments. if they are within a 1000 feet or so I'll hear them doing something.

what perks my ears (in the city) is the occasional ambulance and fire truck drivers who lay it on so thick and loud you'd think it was bring your kid to work day.

"... Zoom In to Look At How You Sound"

I know exactly how I sound. Why do I need a map for that?

Given the stuff I play with when fabricating somethings I should be a big red dot out in the prairie on my sound map location.

I checked out my neighborhood on the map. I-495, a major truck route, about 200 yards from my house is bright red. I just take out my hearing aids when I go to bed, and all is quiet and I sleep undisturbed. There are a few things that make old age enjoyable

Why is it so much noisier in Rogers Park than in lots of downtown?? I don't remember that much noise.

That's a good question. I was scratching my head on that one as well. That little grid of silence north and and west of downtown isn't really silence any more than Roger Park is noise filled.

I'm going to have to look into the method used to generate the data as well as the frequencies monitored. It looks like the aviation noise overlay plays the most major roll in coloring the map even though it's the most minor noise.

Concert venues and so fourth don't show up on the map from what I can see.

I wonder if these are averages over time/taken at different times of day and averaged/different seasons.

I remember sitting in my living room, looking out the sunroom windows towards O'Hare, seeing planes gliding towards or away from the airport, but no airplane noise. I guess the big El station at Howard St. makes noise but not THAT much. Basically a quiet neighborhood.

Re: Noise Map: Enter Your Zip or Zoom In to Look At How You Sound

I see them right now.. (well I would if it weren't so cloudy). I have a wall of glass doors off the kitchen where I can look out over everything. .. and up n over. I keep binoculars nearby.. (where are they?) to try and ID some of planes on the closest flight path. (and the voracious birds consuming ~10-15lbs per week) .. anyhow.. One day I saw what appeared to be a couple of jump jets on a low diagonal path over the property and I got real excited one day and went whooping out the back door huffin' and puffin' about it.... pointing at the sky and such.

I think a neighbor caught a glimpse of me and must think I'm a but of a nut.

A foliage fence in key locations is in the works to obscure my future escapades

(my dream has been to put a tracking camera with pan/tilt/zoom on the roof that would detect and zoom in on the closest aircraft and hold it steady for a bit until it tracks another. I could stream it and have it play on a framed monitor on the wall.. because.. why not?) ..I would want it to look as muck like a static photo as possible.

..totally doable with existing DVR PTZ configurations.. just a little cha-ching to do it well.

From this noise map one would think my home town, Hampton, Virginia, is a model of quietness. But, then, none of the military airbases in and around Hampton Roads are depicted.

Though I do consider F-15's, F-35's and FA-18's the sounds of freedom.

Just south of Cape Canaveral there is an Air Force base, we get some traffic once in a while with helicopters going up and down the beach, touch and go landings for fighter jet training I'm guessing...Now I live a little further south, if I hear a jet it's usually an air show in the area....High speed passes at low altitude, so cool....

My buddy who lives in Stuarts Draft had been survival tech with a helicopter squadron on PMRF, Kauai around the 2000 timeframe. Talk about tough duty.

He has lots and lots of great pictures from the air. Like the school of tiger sharks right off the beach.

They would make weekly grocery runs to Kaneohe MCB on Oahu to go to the Commissary to stock up their little shoppette on the base. Now the NEX does a bit better keeping grocery items when we visited there in 2015. PMRF MWR has some great cottages right on the beach. You can watch the sun set from your lanai.

You were talking about Tiger Sharks. Next sentence you state, "They would make weekly grocery runs to Kaneohe MCB on Oahu to go to the Commissary to stock up their little shoppette on the base".

Lots of swimmers near the shoreline there, eh?

Wow I could've handled Hawaii.

Right after I left Vietnam my Hook unit was deactivated. It was reactivated a couple of months later with a new designation at Ft Wainwright, Alaska. I'm glad I didn't stay in as I hate crewing in the cold. They did a lot of rescues on Denali and even did their re-enlistment ceremonies and special parties about 3/4's of the way up on Denali on a glacier. Somewhere I have pics of Chinooks shut down on the glacier for one of their ceremonies.

Not my cup of tea, at all.

That is a cool link. Thanks!! People should really look at this BEFORE they buy that dream home. I don't live in Annapolis, but most people say, "Where the hell is Arnold, Maryland?" It s very quiet where I live. I can only hear US-50/301 on really quiet, windless nights. There are a lot trees in this area which helps dampen noise.

I can see the aircraft on approach to BWI (right up the Severn River) but at that point, the aircraft is basically in glide mode to scrub altitude. Once they get closer to BWI the flaps come down and then the engines have to be spun up to keep it airborne. If I'm lucky and get a seat on the starboard side, I can usually find my neighborhood. All those rich bastards with waterfront homes on the Severn River get the noise. 95% of the time due to prevailing winds, that air corridor is a landing approach, not a take off.

The greater Baltimore-Wash D.C. looks like this. People just west of BWI get a LOT of jet noise.
