I'd really like to hear its genesis. Are there brilliant guys wanted to show or theorize how it came to be like that? We have no idea what is out there beyond. May be its true, there are planets made out of cheeze and pizza. We don't know.

Ever seen a bathtub ring? That equatorial ridge was formed in much the same way as a bathtub ring, except it had millions of years to form, and on the outside. As Pan slowly rotates, errant bits of ice from Saturn's rings on either side stick to it. Some bounce off, some stick. Some that has stuck sublimates in the vacuum of space. As that ridge sticks out farther than the rest of the moon, that's the part those bits encounter first (Saturn's rings at that distance from Saturn are only about 10 metres thick). The net result is that equatorial ridge. Nothing magic here.

AFAIK the composition of Pan is not significantly different from the other shepherd moons of Saturn. If it was I'm sure it would have made more news. To my eye it appears that Pan was previously two moons of slightly different consistencies and densities that merged in a collision.

While the shape of the moon Pan is correct, I think you should consider a different source of news. Especially for explanations.

As you can see by that image, they used a technique similar to a scanning electron microscope to make the target appear much larger.

Gutmonarch, I would like to ask you a serious question or questions.

Sometimes you make a post or a thread that actually is good or sounds intelligent, but most are not. This would have been a good thread about Pan until you added wondering about square or polygon shaped orbits. Then you add planets made of cheese or pizza. I have seen a few replies from you on other threads that should have been good answers, but most are ridiculous and ludicrous.

Then there are the many replies you make that seem like you are deliberately trying to get under the O.P.'s skin, which you do well. You have been banned, what 6 times now?

I just want to know why? A few of your posts and replies make you seem intelligent, but most do just the opposite.

I don't think you are as big an idiot as you try to imply, why do you do this? Why can't you just play nice with the rest of us? Do you thrive on the dissension?

Ahm, the cheeze and pizza stuff are parallels to finding one habitable planet in the universe. It makes difference when you said the formal quest but just about the same probability of finding cheeze and pizza stuff in the universe. That fact that we have meteors from mars that appear to have fossilized microbes in them tell me we have a better chance of finding extraterrestrial life then finding extraterrestrial cheese.

Yes, and it goes beyond that. That kind of behaviour reflects poorly on the forum as a whole, just like it does on Facebook. We don't need that here.

I absolutely hate facebook with the fury of a thousand white hot suns, that is how I caught my ex in her affair. Most of my family younger than me think it's an appropriate form of family communication, and they get pissed at me for not replying to their requests, they don't realize I log onto facebook about once every 3 months, mostly for my younger 2 kids. What happened to phone calls?

Oh, I've been here a year long before you. I enjoyed much the humour of the fellowship and find advises on some of my questions which is greatly useful. There are nice and oddly nice persons around here. I certainly enjoyed each character.
