Flashback Eliminator

08/17/2007 3:44 AM

On a hot desiel tank return from a desiel driven aircon unit, hot return at 80 degrees C, is there a government H & S or Def Stan regulation that stipulates that a flashback eliminator is to be fitted? (Diesel fuel flash temperature 67C and autoignition 265C)

Seems like an excellent idea, I would say follow that government regulation asap.

The slightest spark from having the wrong clothing or whatever, could ignite this diesel vapour.....the Boing 747 that blew up after leaving New York was blown apart by an almost empty fuel tank, that was heated up by the AC and a broken cable did the rest!!!! It does not take much. Aircraft Kerosene is also not that easily ignited, as petrol is for example, but dangerous non the less for that!! I do not have its flash point in my head, but I would guess that it is not too dissimilar to Diesel, whereas petrol is like -66°C or so, quite a difference!!

You are well over the flash point temperature of Diesel.....

Did you have a question as well, the sentence with a question mark at the end was not to my mind a question, it was a simple statement of fact!!! A good regulation in fact!

Please pose your question if you have one again, thanks.

Do you need a government regulation in order to protect your own health and safety?

Your own numbers show it is needed - JUST DO IT!

You said (quite correctly!):-

Do you need a government regulation in order to protect your own health and safety?

Obviously some people do, as it would appear that the person concerned would not put a flame trap in if the regulations did not call for it!!

You also said:-

Your own numbers show it is needed - JUST DO IT!

Short, clear and to the point. Lets hope he takes your message to heart!!!

I personally tend to be over careful in such situations. For example, many years ago (21) when I bought this house, the gas tank was behind the garage, which is situated roughly in the middle of the garden, between house & garden is a hard yard, behind the garage (where the gas tank was)is grass, trees etc...

The line from the gas tank went through the garage, suspended. The gas tank, was far too close to the garage if ever something went wrong there and there was only one reducer on the whole line.

I had the tank moved as far away as possible to the garage & house, I routed the gas line around the garage and I added a second reducer.....the gas installer was most critical of my "well if you want to throw your money away" so to say attitude.

In between the law does not allow the lines to go through a garage and it is a requirement to have a second reducer!!! I was the only one with a gas tank that did not have to do any changes for miles around here!!! The TÜV came and told me I had to do it, I showed him my setup and he left after apologising!!

If you return line is pressurised and discharges deep into your ready use tank you may be all right. 61.5o C is considered minimum flash temperature for our standard grade diesel fuel (Australia). Here is the link to our diesel fuel info. www.aip.com.au/pdf/fuel_%20regs.pdf

You mean your company needs a government regulation in order to protect its employees health and safety?!

In that case I'd be looking for another company!

Sometimes you just got to do what you got to do and be unpopular and make them see the light and spend the money.

So far I have SAE J-1928 Devices providing backfire flame control in marine arresters and UL 111 Marine Carburator Flame Arresters. But, unfortunately, I need something more in the automotive (heavy vehicle), land based H & S, or a definitive paper on backfire flame arrester research.
