Operating a Natural Gas Genset on LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas /Propane)

06/01/2017 11:37 PM

Can any Gentleman assist for subject query i.e. natural gas based Gas genset Cummins Model: C1540 N5C may run on LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas / propane ) . If it operate on LPG having max contents of Propane / Butane ) instead natural gas ( max % of CH4 )is there any deficiency and de-rating in-terms of power output and any harm for Engine useful life as a LPG fuel.

Regards

I've set up and ran pickups on propane fuel for years now and it's not hard to do and natural gas uses the same systems so generally a natural gas fueled engine will work fine on propane. The only real difference is what the air fuel ratio are set to.

Engine wise the propane will give you a noticeable increase in power over natural gas which on a genset you won't really notice it other than maybe seeing a faster engine response capability to high load events.

All this information is readily available on the internet, you need to do the research and math to figure out if you can get the same BTU's from propane/ butane compared to natural gas.

I converted my 7.5kw Onan 3phase gen-set from gasoline to propane, the conversion was easy enough but the fuel consumption almost tripled for the same loads! So, I found that was cheaper to run the engine on the fuel it was designed for, whether it be petrol gas, diesel or LPG. The bottom line is, you need to get the most bang for your $$ dollar or whichever currency you use. It still cost to run equipment and cutting corners may far exceed the initial fuel cost.

Engineers spend a lot of time and big bucks to deliver fuel efficiency, otherwise, their engines wouldn't sell, the company goes broke and they're out of a job.

That's my 2¢ worth.

"Engineers spend a lot of time and big bucks to deliver fuel efficiency, otherwise, their engines wouldn't sell, the company goes broke and they're out of a job."

Actually engineers spend a lot of time and money meeting emissions requirements that have nothing to do with fuel efficiency and it been standard practice for 40+ years.

Back in the old days pretty much every industrial engine manufacture listed their engines HP-Hr/gallon of fuel used as a braggin and large selling point. Today you can't find a engine HP-Hr/ gallon fuel efficiency rating anywhere.

Theres a reason that the aftermarket industry that specifically works on ways to defeat emissions system related losses in power and fuel efficiency is a multi billion dollar a year and rapidly growing industry that tirelessly works on finding new and better ways to undo the crap fuel efficiency and whatnot problems emissions regulations standards forced on us in every major industry.

There are many different kinds of LPG, you must know the exact chemical content to properly mix it with air....There is such a thing as Simulated Natural Gas (SNG) which is LPG mixed with compressed air....this requires no alteration of engine fuel system...

Here a side by side chart comparison of different fuels- https://www.afdc.energy.gov/fuels/fuel_comparison_chart.pdf

The best advice available is only a phone call away.

Why prat around on CR4 when the answer could be forthcummin (pun intended) in only seconds?

Astonishing.
