There really isn't much in the way of treatments available for this condition...mostly these are to slow down the progress of the disease, rather than improving or correcting the eyesight...in any case treatment takes time to work and requires a patient approach....It's easy to go crazy throwing money at health problems, I just accept I'm getting old and these problems come with having survived so long...in other words I feel fortunate to just still be alive...

The important thing about changes in life is the human ability to adapt. I will in time be in a similar position to your wife.

I have been lucky in having a good education, health, good friends, a great wife and children. I was a reader, an occasional writer (of technical articles mainly), and I have always been curious. Now I realise that I should not only keep fit, but keep up with friends, to talk with them, listen, and help if/where possible.

I still have reasonable hearing. Ask a blind person and they will tell you the worst thing they can imagine is to be deaf, and so be cut off from humanity. I will enjoy asking friends about things I know little about, but where they have had experience. They will paint pictures for me.

My wife will be my eyes and my driver, when needed. When she no longer drives, I must learn to use public transport again, memorise timetables, and as much as possible still maintain a form of independence. I will still be able to write, either by dictating to a person or to a computer with Dragon software. As Frost wrote "miles to go before I sleep".

Adapt, maintain the circle of friends, keep on learning.

I've heard about Lutein, Fish Oil and Omega-3 fatty acids being on most people's lists.

Possibly read a little on zinc also. Some doctors are now confident that some groups of MD patients have a slight statistical benefit from zinc while other groups of MD patients seem to be slightly harmed by zinc. They have found a genetic marker to allow people to know their zinc group. Double check with a doctor that you trust but it is worth looking into.

Once again, this is only presented by them as a slight statistical benefit in slowing down the progression of the disease. Not a cure, not a miracle, but every little percentage point is worth looking into.

In other words, arctic fish (or antarctic krill oil), blueberries, plant phytosterols, carrots, and sunshine (or Vitamin D milk), tomatoes, blueberries, and beets.

Caution: the supplements provide the required amounts more readily than the whole foods.
