Engineering Test Models are big help in learning

08/27/2007 5:59 AM

Friends,

Engineering test models are big help in learning. Here engineers have designed a small test model for water level safety system to work in a river dam reservoir. They have used a bucket full of water in their reservoir model and small water pumps, electronic water level sensors, I2C communication network to embedded system and software to control every function.

I think, such simple looking and functionally high tech test models, which can be tried in labs, can easily be built and used for larger system for real life applications. This model uses Fly-by-wire network technology for sensing and controlling on 2-wires. Engineers are from Mathura, India. They took 4- weeks to design and test this model.

I was mentor and research guide to this engineering team. About 20 such engineering teams come and build their own engineering models for the applications of their choice. I think, engineers should build models that can help them test difficult technologies and should design the model for technology that will change our future.

What is that you experienced engineers think, that fresh engineers should try to experiment with to gain greater applied knowledge using models? Exposure to real things is always better but is not possible many times.

I'm with you 100% on this..building and testing on models is so probably the best way to learn. I sometimes say 'wrong first time' or 'wrong as quick as possible' is the best way to design as you learn so much. this is my little joke on 'right first time' but there is some truth in the joke.

I would trust a model over a computer simulation or a mathematical model every time!

Regards

Del

To make a computer model realistic you need to put experimental data in it and you get those data from experiments working model. If your theory is good enough for a model, will still need experimental data to run for real time experiments. Simulation Models are like open loop controls and realistic designs are close loop controls. You have no practical knowldege without actual experiments.

I do use simulation and most of the time in my head to plan experiments. Computer is used when it crosses the limit of the brain speed or memory capacity. If you have good simulation tools then you can sure use them effectively. Working engineers in India use same quality tools as you use in other developed countries. It is the process for fresh engineers I am talking about here who have little resources on hand.
