This Never Gets Old

08/18/2017 5:04 PM

Living in a northern Detroit suburb, I am only about 3 miles from Selfridge A.N.G.B. I see military aircraft all the time. No big deal, right? Today I get home and get in my house and the rumble starts, gets louder and louder, I run outside and see 6, white with red and blue accent, F-16's flying in tight formation over my house. The Air Force Thunderbirds. I got goosebumps. It seems tomorrow is the start of the annual Selfridge air show.

I tried to take pictures of this Thunderbird practice flight, but just couldn't get my phone out fast enough.

I have lived in this area my whole life and seen these jets the whole time. I remember the F4 Phantoms they had stationed there forever, then they had F16's, now it's the A10's. Besides the planes I have mentioned, I have seen just about every military aircraft you can imagine from WWI bi-planes to B29's, B52's, F22's, F111 and B2's. etc...

If you check the link, you'll see they are going to have some really cool flight demonstrations this weekend.

Both my kids just said they want go, and we are going.

Anybody else see this often and still get excited when they see it again?

I did not see that today, have seen it before. I saw this formation :

Then I saw 5 of them in a tight diamond, then 4 like this :

Then they made their landing runs, one at a time.

We are trying to go tomorrow, depending how early I can get out of work. I will try to post pictures this weekend, I still think this is cool stuff.

Air and water show this weekend here as well!?. It is a great show. I'm a fan of the guys who fly their prop plane like it was a hecolopter. Fun! Freaky! Powerful!

Maybe they're (the fast ones) flying a giant figure eight between our town's?

Sorry about that, I know how some acronyms can be a pain. Growing up and spending my whole life around an Air National Guard Base, A.N.G.B. just seems so common to me. There are signs everywhere around here with Selfridge A.N.G.B. on them, I forget unless you live near one or have been to one, you may not know what A.N.G.B. means.

The base got its start in 1916, it was an A.A.B until 1947, then it became an A.F.B. It remained an A.F.B. until 1971 when it became an A.N.G.B.

More acronyms for you, but they are all in the link. Lots of history with my little base of a neighbor.

If an Engineer/Technical person doesn't get excited about this then he or she is in the wrong profession. It is not the military aspect so much, but the pure engineering genius of these machines that is awesome.

Imagine doing a low pass through a large city 100 years ago....what would they have thought?

I still love trains, I was out west as a kid (12ish) and saw 2 U.P. DDA40X's actually pulling a train (about 3 miles long). My dad had pulled off into field so we could watch those monsters go by. He knew exactly what they were because he had an H.O. scale model of one and one of the 2 was the same number as his model. I now get why he was more excited then us kids. I was just awe struck by the size of them. I only thing train wise close to that was a Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam loco I saw in a museum out west.

A thing of great beauty and a joy forever. These loco's must be preserved. I served part of my apprenticeship on the railways and worked on many Garretts amongst others. Getting old.

Well I didn't get out of work soon enough to go to the air show, but I did get to watch the Thunderbirds finish their demo from my deck. I missed a great photo op when all 6 did a low altitude pass directly over my house, but I managed to get a couple of other pics :

I did see the P51's while I was going into the grocery store before I got home, I would really love to see those fly over my house.

I plan on getting out of here in the next hour or so, so maybe I'll get to see more and get some better pics today.

Enjoyed that and was interested in the slow pass just (presumably) off stall.

Was that unburnt fuel that billowed out behind or just flume for show ?

Incidentally, we now have a rash of imported goose bumps spreading across the UK - reminds one of the black death and all those lumps and bumps.

Thankfully, there is still a chance that goose pimples will recover and be an antidote, although judging by the red squirrel disaster it will be a long drawn out battle.

That first pic was all 6 flying over the runway and 2 of them breaking away with smoke and doing a loop then catching up with the other 4. I was too slow with phone to catch it, only got smoke trails. got digital cam up and ready now, (the one the wife left me) so hopefully I get better pics. Daughter decided she was going to the air show today with her boyfriend, son is still sleeping. So I am going to watch it again from my deck.....

I had two brothers that had pilots licenses and both served in the air force. I love to watch airplanes of all sorts. Yesterday and today there is an air and water show in Chicago, I live about 20 miles south of the city, and it is awe inspiring to watch. The Thunderbirds are not here but the navy Blue angels are. I also live in the approach to Midway airport, Once the worlds busiest airport, and I always turn My head to the sky as the planes approach Midway wondering where they might have originated. although Midway is now considered a medium sized airport it is one of southwest airlines busiest hubs.

Duuuuuuuude.

In that first video, that last pass looked lower than landing!

He looked like he was going to be scrubbing grass stains off the plane's belly.

That. Was. Impressive.

The next town had their annual airshow this weekend. I didn't get to go but we've had all manner of aircraft flying over for the past 3 days.
