Coprolite?

08/19/2017 5:59 PM

I bought this at a yard sale, and I cannot identify the type of rock.It looks like a Coprolite.

Does anyone know for certain? How can I tell?

The color is over saturated, and the color is basically grey instead of blue--sort of a granite grey.

Total length is about 3.25 inches

Thanks in advance for any and all help on this.

I believe Mr. Eagle collects rocks as a hobby, so he probably quite a bit about them.

He must collect everything.I have seen him on this forum for a long time, and he is seldom caught off guard with any subject.

IMHO he is a Google Sleuth par excellence!

Actually,it was thrown in for free when I bought the purple wrestling jacket for my pet redbug.(Trombiculidae).

I also got a bucket of elbow grease, relative bearing grease, and a cloud patch to use when caught in a cloudburst.

Re: Coprolite?

It looks more like: "Bluestone" - one of the many dolerite minerals.

Dolerite is one of a vast number of various feldspar classes. It is a sort of generic term for "foreign" stones at Stonehenge, and not does accurately describe the etiology of the stone geologic origin or it class.

The term you used is not appropriate for a geologically formed stone, essentially as

cop·ro·lite ˈkäprəˌlīt/ noun

  1. (in paleontology) a piece of fossilized dung. -Wikipedia entry for "coprolite" I suspect we have an improper diagnosis for whatever condition this represents.

Notice there is a question mark after the title to my original post.

I did not know what it was.

I have seen my dog leave deposits similar to this after eating cottage cheese, but of course, they were not stone.

Before posting the question, I searched and found several images of coprolites that were similar in appearance, but I was not certain, hence the question, which SE answered quickly and accurately.

Here I noticed I have something a bit similar in my lab, on my desk, and have had for quite some time now, from gravel (ancient river stone) taken in and spread around the plant grounds.

Mine is definitely quartzite, not sandstone, and definitely not limestone.

I performed an acid test on my rock, and it is definitely limestone.

By the way,the wrestling jacket didn't fit..it was too small.

Sorry, but I did not get the part (or joke) about the wrestling jacket...did I miss something, as I can be a bit dense at times.

Re: Coprolite?

A redbug is also known as a Chigger in some parts of the country.(See my post 22,and the scientific name)

I acquired the wrestling jacket at the same yard sale where I got the stone..it was also thrown in free of charge. It did not fit my chigger,it was too small,he complained about it putting pressure on his 'nads, even with the cup in place.

He lost the match up with a flea because of this.

Poor Charlie,he is really down after his first loss.

Does that count as arachnid/arthropod exploitation? Can we even use that term "chigger" these days?

I have not been to East Texas (or other States) in some years, and so I have not encountered a red bug in about that long. Thank the higher power for a semi-arid climate.

Sounds like "Charlie" needs to get some weight training, as he is out of his true weight class. You sure he is not a tick?

Chiggers only have six legs, but the adult mite has eight.- factoid from Wikipedia

It is not PC to question one's ancestry,so what he says he is,is what he is.

He has decided to give up wrestling, and now he wants to play piano.

I have to try to find him a sequined Liberace suit and a small piano.

I'll probably have to make the stool.
