It's That Time Again: The IgNobel Prizes Are Back

09/15/2017 3:18 PM

Read about the winners and laugh, scratch your head, and wonder why your tax dollars fund (at least some) of this research. Happy Weekend!

I love the Physics prize, "On The Rheology of Cats". It's on page 16, 17 & 30 of the link.

Looking at the pictures accompanying the article does make one wonder about the rheology of cats ...

I have contradictory evidence that counters the claim that a cat will fill a lavatory sink as would a liquid. Also, no rheology measurements were made, although I have witnessed a cat swirling a drain before.

Cats most definitively do not completely push the air out of the way when they occupy a lavatory sink, as they do leave small gaps where some of the body parts are less flexible. Notice I did not say flexible, and it took many sessions of pushing the cat into the sink, and never being able to freely fit all the bones, lots of cat screams, hair flying, and many lacerations to my hands and lower arm appendages. At times it appeared that the cat could extract sufficient blood from the human observer to fill all the voids in the sink, but that can never be considered a pure result.

Where is the Ig Nobel Prize for studies of Hillary's nose growth during the last election cycle?

There is no small bit of knowledge, no matter how random, that might not serve you well in some future endeavour....

So all the people practicing Omphaloskepsis , are actually adding to human knowledge?

What about the study of textiles made from Omphaloskepsis combined with wool-gathering? I should think someone had woven a cheese smelling t-shirt by now.

They already have. Have you ever been to the theme parks? Of course that could be a matter of personal hygiene habits rather than the shirts themselves.

Amen ... ask any reference librarian (if indeed there are still people called "reference librarians" around). In my experience the more arcane the knowledge, the better the chance that someone will ask a question about it.

It is not called the Paper Chase for no reason. It is all about the chase, not about the findings, or any capture. Kind of like in dating.

Kind of reminds me when I tried to start an annual Darwin Award ceremony.......

None of the winners ever showed up to receive their awards....
