Aero calc: airstream on a cylinder

Need help calculating the force of an airstream acting on a cylinder segment. Also, the cylinder axis is tilted into the airstream at an angle of attack (picture an aircraft door on the belly of a circular aircraft fuselage).

The 'drag coefficient' relates the instantaneous force on the cylinder segment to the velocity of the stagnant streamline. Needless to say, the drag coefficient varies with airspeed. Check out a good aeronautical engineering textbook. Perry's 'Chemical Engineers' Handbook' also gives several methods of determining this.

Thanks for the reference, I'll take a look. The aero books that I have looked at treat flow around a cylinder that is normal to flow direction. The angled cylinder axis is putting a twist on the problem.


I have heard suggestions to use projected cylinder area normal to flow but I hope to find a published example, or a more developed suggestion.
