Copper-Plated Or Iron-Plated Conductors

08/31/2007 7:52 AM

What would be the electrical "effect" of passing AC or DC through a conductor

made of soft iron with a copper plated surface?

Would the skin effect of current passing over and around the iron, cause a magnetic flux within the iron core?

Similarly, if a wire ,consisted of a copper core, with an outer coating of iron, would the result be the same?

What would be the inductive qualities of such coils. compared to conventional coils?

These wires would have an insulating coating on the outside.

no , refere faradays laws of magnetic induction , this is parllel conductors running in same direction like wire corrosion in coastal regions, even though iron & copper have different conductive properties this is same as having a single wire with plastic insulation , skin effects plays role in high voltage ac transmission , if such wires with outer insulation are wound on soft iron you will get magnetism , but what will be effect of both the format is unclear

Vicas.

I will accept faradays laws on parralel conduction, However, I wondered about the inductive effect caused by the collapsing field? when the conductor is wound in a coil.

Would it be possible to change the collapsing field effect, of say, a transformer, wound with iron coated wire? or copper plated iron wire. It would seem that the flow of magnetism might be changed, effecting the co efficiency of the device.

I would guess that there are no effects to be measured in the way you asked.

A slight deviation from your question is that years ago, before semiconductor memory, we had Core memory, which was hot and needed a lot of energy to work.

Univac was the company given the job of producing the memory (and the processor I believe) for the Moon shots and they only had 1 watt of power to do it with.

They plated aluminium wires with iron and laid them in a matrix, where wires crossed and touched, they could form a magnetic domain as either as a 0 or a 1 bit. 32K I believe was the max......!!

Although it had many of the attributes of core memory, it used very little power and was not needed to be what we called then "destructive readout", which was how core memory was read....

This was a real advance in the 60's.

The wires were kept in a gas filled box to stop rusting on the iron!!!!!

This is all from my memory, so please excuse me if I have made any glaring errors....

Let me guess, would your coil be between 2" and 4" in diam.

and used against a stationary magnetic base?

BTW I am also a Floridian

ST

I used to wind lots of coils, and make the machines that did the winding, infact I probably have one or two machines in my workshop. I havnt' tried winding composite insulated wire to get the answere to my question, yet.

I used to wind square and rectangular coils too. even used aluminum strip upto 30" wide.done some high speed winding up to 60,000 turns per min, with fine wire. got some Patents too.
