Help Needed: Nichrome (Heating cable) insulation jacket?

12/06/2005 10:34 PM

I would like to make an insulation jackets (sleeves) for Nichrome cable (to protect a 3-4mm wire element). Can anyone help me find out (good link?) or think they know the answer please: What commercial electrically insulating materials are used? I think some kind of woven tube cloth would be best?

I think, fiberglass is best and also teflon(PTFE)can work for around 250 Degree C and for higher temp.Ceramic sleevcan work satisfactorily. Thnaks, Arvind Gajera

Silicon may also be useful. Since you did not describe the application in detail it's hard to tell what other constraints or posibiliies might work. You might go to the website of companies like Wattlow that make heaters and get ideas from there. When they make heater elements they spot weld a non-resistance wire to provide a temperature gradient to the termination point, if that would be relevent to what you are doing at all.

Why don't you just get the appropriate thermocouple wire made for your application. Then your insulation is already applied with the proper heat rated sleaving. There are at least five companies across the country that make thermocouples, plus you can a NIST certification with the wire for tracability. I do not remember the name of this company, but you can use the Thomas registry to track them down. The company is located out west in Idaho. They are about the best in the USA for pricing and dilivery. Good luck.
