Wire Up 220 Volt Variac

01/19/2018 11:44 AM

Hello All,
Need some wiring assistance here,
Trying to wire up a 220 volt variac, I have done dozens of 110 volt versions, and it is simple. It;s is more or less just like a GIANT Potentiometer.
A common ground or "Neutral, and hot on the input and a common or Neutral and sliding tap on the output.

But on 220 input power, UG! ya got this coming in,,

B= Neutral or ground, and two Hots, A & C
Now what would go to where on this multi gang beast here, the manufacturer says it will do as a 220 volt variac,
But how would I wire it up so I get on the output zero to full voltage swing?

Joe

Yup that explains what I have always known when doing like a 110 volt one.

But the 220 is for some reason baffling me.

He says in the first video at 3:21 that the wiring is the same for 120 or 240....

Are you using two 110 volt variacs?

Ask the guy for an appropriate wiring diagram....

That should work, assuming the wipers are both mechanically connected and they turn in the same direction (i.e. left in the schematic is counter-clockwise and right is clockwise or vice-versa).

You'll have one unused variac out of the gang of three.

Since both inputs are hot, make sure you switch and fuse both of them.

In your picture (though very clear) I can't read the name plate data. This was a 3 phase unit and I think transformers may EACH have a primary designed for 230 volts. If that is case operating at 120 volt primary you may have less capacity than you think. Example: If each 1 kva, 240 volt you are limited to ~4 amp load at any voltage so if set for 50 volts only 0.2 kva available. If I am correct, and assuming 1kva each, you could wire differently to get 12 amp output.
