Drilling Rig

09/07/2007 12:31 AM

Can somebody kindly advice me on the type of gear combination considered ideal for use as a borehole drilling head? I am building a borehole drilling rill but have the option of choosing between a worm & spur gear combination and spur gears combination.

What are the advantages of one over the other?

As a non-expert, I think you'd find spur gears would enjoy a longer life than worm&wheel for a given mass or volume. That's just a feeling from past automotive experience.

Worm gear would have less back lash. Which would could reduce chatter at the cutting edge if its being used to turn the tool. Less back lash would all so improve accuracy if its to be use for linear motion of the head.

Never Worm. Efficiency very low--~50% or less.

If you need to Push a pipe/boring tool through ,you will have to drive the SPUR Bull gear by another spur gear reducer.

And here you can use a high-efficiency Vertical axis Planetary GearBox. This will be the lightest, most compact and most efficient.

Want the Planetary Gear-motor? I can help.

I saw your response very interesting and applicable. But considering the lightness of the planetary gearbox system, don't you think torque may be sacrifice?

However, how may I get the planetary gear motor you said you can help me with?

<how may I get the planetary gear motor you said you can help me with>

I can of course:

Please state your Problem :

-With desired Drive motor spec and the output Pinion Detail spec--needed by you to drive your Existing Bullgear

-if you need the final Bullgear also-please add to your shopping list.

Now E-mail to < svgears@vsnl.net; mktg@svgears.in> attention of Mr.Pravin Dhane.

Please mention that I recommended <mikemahant@hotmail.com>. He will be very helpful. And their products are good and reliable.

Tell him to get explanation/clarification /selection additionally from me.

Worm gears are not advisable. First, the possible ratio(s) are not practical, and second, when you stop the drive motor, the driven gear stops almost instantainiously, this will cause the drill string to backlash down hole resulting in loss.

Spur gears are much more efficient and can easily provide the needed ratio between driver and driven gears. They will free wheel when the motor is turned off providing you drive them with an open center system. As far as vibrational torque is concerned, the tortional characteristic of the drill string will absorb most of this.

Just my 2cents worth; after 42 years in the biz, this ain't my first rodeo!

Let me know if I can help.
