Is It Possible To Connect Several iPads Without Internet Connection?

01/26/2018 6:54 AM

Hello everyone.

I am working as an industrial engineer in a company which provides the media content. I am not an expert in communication or computer science, but there a case where these topics are involved.

The case is that there must be an administrator Ipad and user Ipads over a distance of approximately 150 feet. They need to be connected locally, without internet connection.

I am doing a research about it, and I thought you could help me with the devices that could do this, what is the name or price range or give a hint about it.

With best regards & Sincerely!

Under the settings you can turn on "Personal Hotspot" which allows that device to work as an internet switch to other devices. You might want to research that topic because I do not use it.

If you want to provide a more directed or controlled content for each of the Ipad's in use then you could set up an Intranet (Local Area Internet) that has a server running an HMI application such as an InduSoft Web Studio application. That will allow you to send wireless information that your server has control over to multiple users. The only problem is that they are still linked together and every Ipad sees the same information. Everyone has the ability to manipulate a shared mouse, or not as you like. You really need more description, but instead of the term administrator, you should probably be using "server". Still, I think I follow.

Lastly, if you want something different it will cost more. But the InduSoft software is quite reasonable. It was meant to talk to all kinds of PLC's but it is powerful enough that you don't really need a PLC at all. Prices are based on how much capabillity you want. You can go to their website for more information. www.indusoft.com is the URL.

Firstly thank you very much for your response!

I am planning to give tickets with barcodes which are assigned to each customer in advance. Users are going to scan barcodes to activate Ipads, by this "admin" Ipad is going to see which are being activated.

The thing is that, user Ipads are going to be pre-loaded with the content. And I need one "admin" Ipad to see which Ipads are being used, by which user.

For this case I need to connect them, but without Internet connection.

So, no access to the internet. Makes sense. Scanning a random barcode, no problem. One iPad is to collect data as to which barcodes have been scanned or which iPad was used to scan in each barcode? Is this for a door prize? Can an iPad scan other barcodes?

The idea of HMI software is to pull information from a machine and display it any way you want to see it. It uses a PC to act as a server (of data). The term "Admin" is going to take you in the wrong direction, I think.

The idea of a Personal Hotspot does not serve your needs? Without a "server" to send out information to all of the iPad "clients" there is no way to do this. You will probably need to have a laptop with a wireless connection act as a server. Then you can have one iPad act like your Administrator to a limited extent. Software is required to make this happen. You will have to understand it and create your very own application. At the same time, your Admin iPad has the ability in the settings to turn ON a thing called a personal hotspot which effectively gives all of the other iPads a wireless channel to connect to.

Then all iPads will be wirelessly connected to a single iPad through the "Hotspot". Anything else requires wires. Range of the Hotspot is also somewhat limited.

Make sure the phone option is turned off in the settings or the internet will still be accessible.

Thank You very much for your reply!

The one Ipad is supposed to show which Ipads have scanned the barcode. Ipads are going to scan same type of barcode, which is going to pre-assigned to each seat. By this I want to see which Ipads scanned the barcode and have been activated.

Regarding HMI software - if I am not making any mistake, this means that, I can even not use that "admin Ipad", and insteadof it I can use just a laptop?

Sincerely!

Having got over that now, we can get into it. Yes, use the hotspot button. Make it access-controlled by the master iPad. This also means that other users will iPhone or laptop computer can also "sign in", provided you give them access information.

I think all you need is the iPads themselves. Why not ask your Apple provider?

You are asking your "master iPad" to function as an intranet server, which is not something it is designed to do. You need server software on a PC, plus a router to give the wireless connection to all the iPads. The router does not have to be connected to a broadband line in order to function, so the internet remains inaccessible.

You can set up privileges on the server so that one iPad has more access than others, but what you can find for software for your particular application is another matter.
