01/31/2018 10:55 AM

It's hard to believe its been 2 1/2 years since New Horizons flew by Pluto and sent back our first up-close images of the planet dwarf planet. As you may or may not know, New Horizons is now on its way to the Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) 2014 MU69, traveling at roughly 50,000 km/hr. The flyby of the KBO will occur 43.4 AU from the Sun (6.5 Billion km). It is scheduled to arrive New Years Day, 2019. Here is its current location:

I'm still amazed at how fast this probe is going with using only rocket power and only the gravity assist of Mars.

The Kuiper Belt is so full of stuff... wonder what else is in the path to MU 69 and beyond! It is really a happy day when exploring craft exceed their best before dates and go on to new adventures.

Artist's conception of the "bilobed" MU 69 can be seen here, and a discussion of the moon or moons discovered during the occultations of several stars.

WIll be exciting to see it and the whole package! Until then...

and satellites!
