Standard Wiring for M8 and M12 Connectors?

03/05/2018 11:12 AM

Hi all

Is there a standard anyone knows off for terminating M12 and M8 connectors ?

I looked at the IEC 61076-2-101

but i dont see anything on regarding pin numbers.

For example, is there something that says pin 1 should be power, pin 2 should be signal, i know pin 5 for a 5 pin connector is commonly the ground or shield.

Is this laid out anywhere?

Thanks in advance

I haven't come across any standards.

We use the Phoenix Contact sensor/actuator boxes & connectors.

The 4-pin types have pins 1,3,4 and 5 with power on 1, 0V on 3, signal on 4 and ground on 5. (Note: no pin 2 - how logical is that?).

The 5-pin types have pins 1 to 5, with the same connections as above and a second signal connection on 2.

Edit - I've just found this:

which may help.

Hi, thanks for the info, Did you see something specifically interesting in that doc?

I had seen it before but did not see anything that really applied. Maybe i missed what you are seeing?

Thanks in advance

I was a bit rushed at work. Saw the table of standard layouts but didn’t have time to check for standard pin assignments - posted it just in case.

The connectors can be used for multiple systems, so it is the systems they are connected to that determine the pin-outs. In other words an M8 connector 4 pin used for Ethernet has a specific pin-out for Ethernet, but that is not the same for Profibus or Modbus. Nor is it the same if the device is a 24VDC 2 wire sensor, and it might be different for one sensor brand or type compared to another. So the pin config is not a standard associated with the connector itself, it's associated with whatever you are using it for.

There is a semi-standard based on European color codes. A large majority of M12 cables, and instruments connected via M12 receptacles, have brown on pin 1, which is +V, white on pin 2 which is signal, blue on pin 3 which is voltage common, black on pin 4, which can be a second signal, for instance the opposite signal of white in a DP relay output, or an analog output if the white is a discrete one, or what ever, and grey on pin 5, and this is also a "whatever". A majority of the instruments and cables we use on our process skids follow this pattern. That said, I know the first time you try to use this, you'll find a cable or instrument that is different. Definitely most bus system cables are going to violate this. However it is a good guide to start with.
