What are the Grooves for on Square Taper Washers?

03/21/2018 4:29 PM

There was recently a question about substituting different taper washers. I just found the specs. and copied them into an answer but Codemaster asked a good question.

I've found that the washers are used on U sections:-

And I beams:-

But I can't find out what the grooves are for.

Anyone know?

I don't yet know about the grooves, either, but several other details may be of general interest. For S (standard I-beam) and C (standard channel) shapes, I think the USA standard flange slope is 1:6. W (formerly WF) and U shapes are bent or welded from flat plate, and thus have no taper. Around the world, there may be other tapers, which could be important from location to location.

1 Rolled-in grooves for indication of (8 ± 0.5) % taper (on top side)

Not sure how this works. Still looking for how to read grooves.

6º ≠ 14% (not even particularly close).

In the drg, the upper and lower illustrations refer to different animals (upper one has only 1 grove, lower one has two).

Just guessing. Maybe they allow for alignment for machine assembly.

If you want a second opinion, maybe the grooves are there to indicate that the washers are installed correctly. (Grooves should be on the nut side.)

Link

What are Tapered Washers?

Tapered Washers are Square Washers with a tapered shape, and an integrated groove for use with U-Sections or I-Sections.

Going far out on the limb of assumptions, maybe one groove is for I-beams and two is for U sections?

So how and why does that work with U and I sections? Or does just saying it make it so?

I believe an I section (DIN435) has a 14% Taper and a U Section (DIN434) has a 8% Taper.

I wouldn't put too much confidence in this particular drawing. The drawings Lyn provided in two different posts both clearly showed the grooves on the Nut side of the washer, opposite to the side with the fillet/rounded edge. This drawing isn't quite as clear, but it definitely shows the grooves on the Flange side of the washer. I'm pretty sure Lyns drawings are correct.

Thanks to everyone who's contributed.

I'm buying the idea that they are non functional, and, for identification/orientation purposes.

as a guess, maybe a location so the aren't put in at 90 degrees or upside down...

Nothing in Machinery's Handbook that I saw.

My understanding is that the grooves denote the Din number of the part - 1 groove is Din 435 and 2 grooves is Din 434.

My WAG is the grooves provide a tactile marking for when one is installing one of these washers in a blind location.

I'm not sure if that is the intended use, but I can verify from experience way back in my apprenticeship days that they are definitely used that way in practice.

This will sound off the wall, but it fits the discussion.

Year's ago i asked the same question to an electrician as it happens.

The 'possible''use was for running a copper bonding wire under a large washer to ground the trusses. Or ground an antenna. Pots etc.

Sounds probable but if I look at the installation picture Randall send the grove is upwards.

Dodgys pics show them so you could install the wire the way you say.

But from how the hole is drilled the grove will look upwards it installed properly.

Rixter's guess (#3) is correct!! If you can't see/feel the grooves then the washer is upside down, resulting in the bolt hole not being normal to the bearing surface of the nut/bolt, nor will the washers/bearing surfaces be parallel if the bolt OD is nearly the ID of the washer hole.

While that certainly helps, there are many varieties that aren't Din rated and therefore do not have the grooves.

I hope this helps. I have used these washers in the design of equipment for the steel industry.

That's good: GA; but, unfortunately in the original thread he was asking about DIN 434 and DIN 6918.

The 6918 has a 14% (8°) taper like the 435 and two grooves like the 434:-
