List of obsolete or amalgamated companies

Is there a register of companies, manufacturers, subsidiaries, brand names, etc., which are either obsolete or have been bought out, taken over, changed names and amalgamated? It is almost a full time job (and sometimes really frustrating) trying to locate and/or obtain information on some electrical equipment that is just only 5 to 10 years old due to the reasons aforementioned. You could try getting a set of older (5-10 years) of the Thomas or Fraser registries. These might give you the companies you are looking for and if you try their contact info you may/may not get transferred to the new/take over company. You might also want to try the local stock exchange in your area as well.

Contact your regional sales reps/distrubtors of the equipment in question, they are usually pretty good at knowing who bought who etc... even if they don't carry that particular brand, they are usually helpful enough to put you in touch with who does carry it... and if you do find such a registry that chronicles these changes please let us know, it would be nice to know who owns who or who changed their name/spunoff divisions etc.
