Does anyone have a calculation sheet for using ss pipe as a keel cooler on a pump stations diesel engine?

Many narrowboat engines use keel coolers. As with most things, size is important; there was an article in Waterways World magazine a few months back about sizing them.

You need some heat transfer coefficients don't you? Maybe even have to measure some in appropriate conditions?

Will find it for you tomorrow.

Better off using 90/10 Cupro nickel than SS pipe, unless of course you have a specific reason for using SS.

Here is what I have, it's for marine keel coolers but it should work OK for your application:-

Jacket water heat rejection .....................................BTUs/min, kW

Jacket water flow...................................................gpm, l/sec

Vessel speed classification......................................(not required for your engine)

Anticipated max sea water temperature......................F0, C0 or in your case this would be the raw water temperature.

Min cooler area required.............................................ft2/BTU/min, m2/kW

Min area required (line 1 x line 5).................................ft2.m2

Unfortunately I forgot the chart for line 4. Hopefully I can remember it tomorrow when I go to work. Sorry about that.

Unfortunately, my scanner has decided to throw the claw in, however, if you could forward me the anticipated maximum raw water temperature and your maximum engine kW, I will try and get a figure back to you.
