Quantum Radar to be Tested

04/23/2018 9:25 AM

I found this pretty interesting. The Canadians will be testing a new kind of radar, called Quantum Radar, which they claim will help radar operators cut through heavy background noise and isolate objects. The Radar should be able to detect stealth aircraft.

That could be a game changer, but the statement:

'But in order for quantum radar to work in the field, researchers first need to realize a fast, on-demand source of entangled photons.

“The goal for our project is to create a robust source of entangled photons that can be generated at the press of a button,” said Baugh.'

Makes me think it is still a loooong way in the future.

Unfortunately, the word "Quantum", is beginning to have the same overused flavor as nano, graphene, and super-capacitor.

That's because it was replaced with a flux capacitor.

I know, all of those technologies are valid, I just can't stand all of the media hype that they get. Most of it undeserved.

Some scientist discovers new properties of an object that under certain conditions (small-nano, made from or doped with graphene), and mentions in an interview that it could (possibly) lead to smaller/lighter/more powerful/... thing-a-mabobs. The scientist is looking at 10-20 years down the line, the reporter embellishes that to be the next 5ish years, and popular mechanics puts out a story that we will all have flying cars in the next 6-9 months.

I have been waiting for my jet pack for the last 40 years!

Jet pack?

Yves Rossy has been all over that. OK, it is a flying wing but . . . .

From a Wired article.

China claims to have a working model that can detect targets at 100 km.

How does a Quantum Radar work?

Apparently, an entangled pair of photons is created at optical wavelengths. One of these is converted to a microwave photon and transmitted toward the target. The other photon is stored. When the photon from the target returns, it is converted back to optical and compared with the stored photon.

Conversion between microwave and optical (and back) is achieved by an optical and a microwave resonator which are coupled together by a piezoelectric resonator.

Seems like a lot of processing power would be required....

Stealth planes can be detected NOW simply using cellphone tower transmissions and triangulation...duh!
