Bosch Makes Claim of Cleaner Diesel Engines

04/27/2018 10:08 AM

..."Bosch said its new process optimizes thermal management of exhaust temperatures, slashing nitrogen oxide emissions to one-tenth of the legally permitted limit, and doesn’t require new hardware. The system keeps emissions stable even at cold temperatures."...

..."“With this new exhaust technology blanket driving bans in the centers of the world’s major cities will no longer be an issue. Why? Because we now have the technology to resolve the problem of nitrogen oxides in road traffic," Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner said, according to Automotive News.

Bosch gave no indication of how much the system would cost.

Fitch Ratings said Thursday if this works as claimed, car manufacturers will breathe a sigh of relief, and it will ease the pressure to quickly switch to electric vehicles."...

Cleaner diesel

We're going the other way in the USA, encouraging more air pollution, not less.

Clean diesel? Didn't another German company cheat to make this claim earlier. Bosch now has a very tough job to prove this claim. The only way they might be able to do this is to lose any proprietary claims to the technology.

My 2012 VW Jetta diesel is part of the global law suit. Once i get the "modification" I will get a heft sum from VW as well as a less than hefty sum from Bosch

I don't know how things may be in CT, but we had one CA Passat diesel fixed months ago, and got the rewards from VW and Bosch. Get it done while you can... My other one was traded in on a newer one, already fixed, over a year ago. We lost a couple of mpg due to the fix...

Then if you like the car, you could get a quote from EVWest to convert it to electric -

(Others can do this, too)

- nevermore buy diesel!

& a tankful of electrons every morning! even yesterdays sunshine? -

Sounds like an off-shoot of the Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition engine mentioned on CR4 abut 4 years ago.

I haven't heard anymore about the RCCI engine, so I figured the technical problems couldn't be overcome yet.

Re: Bosch Makes Claim of Cleaner Diesel Engines

..."Bosch says its new technology, on average, emits no more than 13 mg of NOx per kilometer, which is far less than the 120 mg permitted by European standards after 2020. Test vehicles in real-world conditions see reductions to as little as 40 mg. It uses off-the-shelf parts so there is no cost escalation and it is available to customers immediately."...

..."Temperature plays an equally important role, the supplier says. To ensure optimum NOx conversion, exhaust gases must reach a minimum of 390° F (200° C). But during urban driving, temperatures frequently fail to reach that level, so Bosch implements a sophisticated thermal-management system to actively regulate exhaust-gas heat to ensure the system stays hot enough to keep emissions low.

Other notable technical details include combining the particulate filter and SCR catalyst into one unit and locating it closer to the engine to scavenge heat.

But the supplier says it can go further in cleaning up tailpipe emissions from combustion engines with artificial intelligence, where excluding carbon dioxide there would be no impact on ambient air.

Bosch also announces plans around cleaning up CO2 emissions, which relate more closely to fuel consumption. For heightened transparency, it no longer will conduct consumption tests in the laboratory; instead they will be conducted in real driving conditions."...

No thanks. We've been under a severe particulate air pollution advisory here in Phoenix for the last 4 days.

I'm thinking of sending air samples to the idiots in Washington DC who are rolling back air and water pollution rules.

I'd probably get arrested for trying to harm those responsible.

Correct, the wind has died down today.

I remember seeing the smoke from older diesel cars, and the black smudge that old Mercedes always had after some time. I've had VW Passat diesels for nearly 5 years, and have never seen the slightest hint of smoke or smudge. I also remember the smell of those old diesels, and haven't had even a hint of that, either.

I'm quite well aware that NOxes and CO2 are invisible and odorless, but particulates are visible (in sufficient concentration) and have an odor.

I think the cat converters have pretty well solved the particulate problem.

Of course, you probably don't want a cat converter... :)-

Both produce aromatic particulates.

A friend of mine bought one of these in 1982, he ran the bajeezus out of it.

41/51. About the same as today's mpg's.
