More Efficient Heating and Cooling for EVs

05/02/2018 2:58 PM

Tesla has been in the news a lot recently and most of the news is bad. I did find something interesting about some hope for the beaten up company. I am not an expert in nanotubes and I know a little about refrigerant cooling and heating (from working on HVAC home systems).

For those who understand the technology and science, can you shed some light on this concept? Does this article make sense and if so, how feasible is it to implement, specifically the nanotube stuff.

Here's the article. https://plsadaptive.s3.amazonaws.com/eco/files/event_content/vNZRiSwdksoxajPfWsqzM5mR5JEAreuFarwGhZ6x.pdf?X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAJ7JHP4DZFO4GBYRA%2F20180502%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20180502T175346Z&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Expires=600&X-Amz-Signature=095d3556d62124e7fadd326d102b01c19aaa4da0633da14c0bdf002634a08caa

Thank you.

If they did a remake of "The Graduate", "plastics" would be replaced by "nanotubes."

(Unfortunately, your link led only to an error message.)

Hi Tornado,

Solar has a link that works. Not sure why mind doesn't, so thanks Solar.

A little off topic, but I thought The Graduate was a really cool movie. I was very young when the movie came out and I'm surprised that the future was in plastics. As I look at my desk as I type this, maybe he was right - my keyboard, monitor, phone, mouse, calculator, desk top (formica), computer, tablet, pen holder, pens, white board, chairs, carpeting (nylon type), printer, printer stand, cell phone, sunglasses, car keys, markers, white out, laptop bag, etc - all made of plastic.

Though this was the best part of the movie!

There appears to be a link error.

Do you have another link?

Wow, you amaze me! Thank you. I'm not sure why my link didn't work. Content of your site is the same, but the layout is different. Word for word it's the same, so since my link doesn't work, we'll use yours!

Sorry about that. Solar has come to the rescue again. Please use his link.

Thank you.

The bit about carbon nanotubes in the article is about using a resistive heat film (vice wires) in the seats that contacts the occupants. The carbon nanotube film is supposed to be more robust and also have very low thermal mass compared to wires.... but it is still resistive heating. That part doesn't see connected to Tesla.

The article is mostly about EV moving to the higher efficiency of heat pumps from resistive heating and research to that end. This seems like a natural solution for all but very cold weather.

In a nutshell, Tesla is taking heat from the drive motors and using it to heat the cabin in cold weather using resistance heating wire as a backup. So Tesla runs a hybrid heater using waste motor heat and standard resistance backup.

The discussion on nanotube heating elements and heat pumps doesn't necessarily apply to Tesla, though Tesla will still be using an electrically driven compressor for air conditioning.

The main thrust of the article was to talk about the test to see which refrigerant and compressor system was most efficient in a test in northern China and then to do a recap of general systems used for automotive cabin heating and cooling.
