Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit no signal P0717

09/13/2007 7:09 PM

Have a 2000 Chev Malibu V6 auto with generic error P0717. No matching GM code. Where is this sensor located specifically. My available manuals give no picture locations and I'm not a mind reader nor wiz mechanic. I know the turbine is spinning cause the vehicle drives fine with only slightly harder (sharper) shifting.

Have a look at the circumference of the bell house casing of the gearbox. Even on the engine side of it. The sensor measures engine speed somewhere on the torque converter. Check its signal with an oscilloscope. Usually this sensor is a 2-pin variable reluctance sensor that gives peaks of voltage that increase a bit with RPM but also become shorter with RPM.

The harder shifting is normal because the TCU does not know the turbine speed and to protect the friction materials inside the transmission it will put extra high pressure on brakes/clutches to avoid long slip time.

Check the wiring as well; check if the signal arrives at the TCU (look for the colors of the wires), wiring may be damaged or a connector corroded, typically the result of cleaning your car's underhood with a high pressure water jet. I have seen this before on other vehicles.

Please leave a message on this thread about how you solved it.

Best regards

We had this once before I believe on CR4, it turned out to be the sensor that actualy displayed the speed in MPH....Nothing to do with the Turbo.....look to see if there are any wires coming from the Turbo, I have personally never seen a car with a Turbo sensor.....(Turbine also not!!)

It will be on the gearbox or transmission usually....

Two minds alike... Nice to meet you then.

And funny to see a quote from Winston

Do you know his father's name as well?

Speedo works fine its the tranny that has the problem. No turbo on vehicle.

the 'turbine speed sensor' measures the engine RPM, using the gear teeth on the flywheel ring gear. The ring gear is mounted on the transmission 'torque converter' housing ,in which is the 'fluid turbine'

It is right next to the Turbo Encabulator.

There is a brief description on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLDgQg6bq7o

I hope this will help you.

The sensor is located inside the tranny housing very near the flywheel attach joint. I'm told that it can be reached without totally removing the tranny, but the service manuals say to remove the tranny. I vacillated around long enough (several weeks) to have my check engine light go out and the tranny return to normal operation. In my case, the wiring harness got soaked in a carwash and I'm again told that it is common for this to occur. Anyway it fixed itself, be patient you to could be lucky.

If you're going to replace it I'd recommend you get a mechanic to do it. It will be expensive.
