USB to Parallel printer Adaptor

09/15/2007 10:13 AM

Can anyone tell how to convert a USB connection to a parallel printer plug (Dongle) for a Programming Kit?

The USB has a standard layout in its design, and the parrallel plug is the same.

Build your dongle plug in the same fashion. Transmit and recieve lines, signal, ground, and so forth. These are the same as doing a serial to parrallel dongle as well.

Just that simple. Most all books written on aquiring the MSCE certification will have the basic wire diagrams in the back of the books for building all cables related to the computer world and are industry standards.

Good luck, Maximo

I think I have to rephrase myself.

How you build an adaptor that links a Dongle that is supplied with the programming kit to a USB port on my laptop that does not have other type of ports?

Buy the other cables and splice them together.

You will still need the diagrams and pin out.

You will need some sort of adaptor as USB is serial, 1 data line (or maybe 2... one in each direction?)... so it can't be simply spliced into a parallel printer plug which has 8 data lines.

Best bet is search for parallel/serial coverter or get onto the Programming kit manufacturer to see if they have an upgrade or adaptor.

(I'd say simply slicing cables has a zero (+/- 50%) chance of working. Although I reserve the right to be wrong or of no help whatsoever)

How about installing a parallel port on your computer. I dont know if your program will recognise this.

Easy. Go to local Walmart computer section and buy one for $18. Done.

Most manufacturers of software that use Dongles will exchange it for a USB Dongle for a small charge. In fact, last year I got one replaced that way for nothing!!!

There are USB to parallel adapters, but test it before buying.

I once had a parallel dongle with a thruport that would not let some printers work!!

If your PC has a spare PCI slot (eg its not a Laptop) then just buy a parallel adapter card on ebay....

If it is a Laptop, there are special PCI frames that plug into a PCMCIA slot (if you were clever enough to buy a Laptop with that, Toshibas can be bought like this...

Magma Box is one of them......but do not buy the 64 bit Magma box, it runs slower than the 32 bit box and the 32 is cheaper!!

If you are running Vista, then all bets are off.......test before committing...

You can buy a ready made cable for less that $10.

Keyspan UP-6C USB Parallel Printer Adapter 6ft

Google for: "Parallel Printer to USB Cable"

If you had read the ad through first, you would have seen the following line:-

This product is not designed for use with other types of parallel devices (e.g. hard drives, security dongles, scanners).

Which is exactly what I mentioned before......!

Go to this website: http://sewelldirect.com/usbtoparallel.asp

$13.95 or they also have a PCMCIA card and cable for your laptop, $99.95. No question this will work.

Simple, quick, easy.

It will work if the Laptop has a PCMCIA slot.

I had a devil of a job buying a powerful Laptop last year with such a slot, I would go as far to say that most modern laptops do NOT have this slot!!!!
