Hydropower

06/28/2018 5:18 AM

How much energy, theoretically and realistically, can be produced by 3000 gallons per minute of water, falling from a height of 100 ft,using the current alternator-turbine technology?

Thanks in advance for all feedback on this!

This page has a formula to figure it out.

Re: Hydropower

3000 gpm x 8 lb/gal x 100 ft = 2,400,000 ft lb/min

2400000 ft lb/min x 1 hp/33000 ft lb /min = 72.73 hp

2400000 ft lb/min x 1 W/44.25 ft lb /min = 54.237 KW

Hydroelectric plants are about 90 percent efficient, so about 49 KW.

Somewhat optimistic, IMO. 90% efficiency for the alternator would be good going, as would 80% for the turbine, giving close to SolarEagle's 40kW at most. Those efficiencies probably generous for such a small system.

Unfortunately, mini-hydro units do not have nearly as much efficiency as the "big boys".

I see 49 KW, and 40 kW as answers???

I see no kWh.

Is it me, or are we missing something?

OK, OP did say energy, not power, but as he didn't say over what time period, power seems more useful. I'm sure he can take it from there!

He should have asked for power, not energy, having given gallons per minute...

Re: Hydropower

I actually wanted energy and power, hence the mixing of terms, but I should have been more explicit considering the highly esteemed and educated populace of this blog.

I will try to clarify in the future.

As for being a RedNek,yes, I am,and proud of it.

We even passed a law recently declaring that if you and your wife get a divorce, she can still be your cousin.

This country owes a lot to rednecks, for instance:

The toothbrush was invented in Arkansas.

Anywhere else,it would have been called a teethbrush.

Thanks for the valuable feedback and compliments from everyone.

As there is a rate in the input data, and not a quantity, the output is the rate of doing work, i.e. the power, and not the quantity of work available, i.e. the energy.

<...missing something?...> No, because the original poster does not state the quantity of water available, so all that can be known is the rate: <... no kWh...> is understandable.

Simply multiply by the number of hours operated.

What good is power if it does no work?

That's enough power to run 4,000 sewing machines continuously.

Lyn, I think you're trying to wind us up!

Power for any length of time (> 0) does work.
