We use heat-shrink kits from DSG Canusa. Similar products are available from RayChem.

The CJT80 kit is for 1-conductor PILC to 1-conductor XLPE. http://www.dsgcanusa.com/pdfs/Electrical%20Products%20Datasheets%20by%20Group/Medium%20Voltage%20Products/Medium%20Voltage%20Joint%20Kits/CJ%2080%20Series.pdf

The CJT90 kit is for 3-conductor PILC to three 1-conductor XLPE. http://www.dsgcanusa.com/pdfs/Electrical%20Products%20Datasheets%20by%20Group/Medium%20Voltage%20Products/Medium%20Voltage%20Joint%20Kits/CJT%2080%20Series.pdf

If you are splicing XLPE in the middle of a long run of lead, remember that the splice will stop oil from reaching the PILC cable downstream of the XLPE. If you don't havel a separate oil source downstream of the XLPE, the paper will eventually dry out and you will have more PILC failures.

Have a heat shrink type staight cable joint kit. Prepare both cables tails conductor for sleeving in suitable cross section similar metalic / bimetallic ferrule and crimp with suitable tool. Cover with heat shrink solution in suitable enclosure as required class of protection.
