When I started into the EE course at PSU in 1968, the Dean told us that 75% of us would never be an EE. We would be in an engineering or technical field, just not an EE, because a person with an EE degree has proven to be the most flexible and trainable of the technical degrees.

For example, while I worked as an EE for 4 years after college and am currently working as an EE, I spent 11 years as a psuedo petroleum engineer, running instruments down the borehole to analyze petroleum reservoirs and predict future production. It was far easier to train a EE in some geology and petroleum reservoir dynamics, than to try to train a geologist or petroleum engineer how to run and maintain the required electronic recording devices. Of all the engineers I worked with in this field about 80% had a degree in EE. While I did work with a man with a geology degree once, he didn't last long. When the electronics failed, he didn't know how to repair such, and just threw the equipment around in the recording truck.
