Now What?

07/18/2018 4:56 PM

Now here is one I have not yet seen.

NOTE TO ADMIN: Maybe leave the spam posts in place for few days, would ya?

https://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/110460/Free-Steel-Alloy-Database-SteelNumber

This thread in Commercial sat unmolested for a year and a half. Spammer found it four months ago, now has 8 comments, all different spammers.

Spammers spamming the spammers.

What, is there no honor in being a spammer any more?

Can someone expand on the entire spam thing? Do these guys get a dime for every one they can plant, or is it all about driving traffic to a site in hopes of infecting some machines, or... what?

The spam has to be located by a person and deleted, there is no automatic system for deleting spam....We can't read every old post every day just to find spam...How did you happen to run across this?

The fact that they are there undiscovered isn’t concerning for me at all. I sometimes drive around looking for something and come across a lonesome spam from 4 years ago, a phone number or email address maybe. Can a mod advise, should these dusty remnants be left alone, or reported.

Regarding discovery today, I was marveling at the number of new members with ‘noisy’ usernames with zero posts (I understand this is a symptom indicating a forum spammer) and one of very few with a single post was ???, whomever poster #8 is on the linked thread in the OP. I clicked through to their profile, hit show comments and found it, then find in discussion. Easy-Peasy Cheddar-Cheesy!

This thread is not intended to be a complaint, quite the contrary. A review of the several hundred new members in the last week that display this spammer symptom is staggering - and it goes back for months and months.

I am afraid to speculate, but in Conference Room #2 (across the corridor from CR4) this pandemic of spammers is possibly the center of some intense preoccupation regarding the continued support of this forum by GlobalSpec.

Is there anything we can do to help?

If the originator is still around to complain, you might get into trouble over that. (Voice of experience.)

SE, you may as well kill this thread as well, as we no longer have a subject thread to consider.

Probably a good idea to do so, this thread confirms the existence of dark moderators, additionally confirming the identity of two such members.

Such is life, I have no heartburn one way or the other.
