Suitable Pump For Spray Drying

09/19/2007 11:46 PM

Which type of pump is suitable for the spray drying of the ceramic material slurry (suspension) for feeding the slurry with desired flow rate? Suggestions please.

  • At what pressure need you spray through your nozzle?
  • At what mass /time of ceramic powder +waterSLURRYneed you spray?
  • What is the mass % of Ceramic powder in water?
  • Grain size of ceramic powder sprayed?

Dear all

The partical size here is 5 micron the weight persentage is 65% and the pressure required is 10 bar the spray dryer is continuous duty the slurry needs continuousl stirring.

Your Specs. are clear.

So all you need is to implement on that basis. Create the conditions at nozzle.

You want steady and continuous spray-right?

So rig up solution as somebody already said:

  • 1 or 2 pressurized (continuously)Stirred vessels--air pressurized to 10 bar above loaded slurry .
  • piping with Ball valve/s to nozzle/s.
  • Spray happily and continuously 24x7 with only gap of time to switch tanks.

You'll need a feed tank with a mixer attached to keep your slurry in suspension. Usually diaphragm pumps are used for slurries, but they give a pulsating flow. Centrifugal pumps give a continuous flow, but slurries can wear them out quickly. Check with a pump supplier for his recommendations.

For spray dryers, the feed is by pressurized vessels.

This is what we do for milk powder and pharmaceutical spray dryers. The mixture is made by stirrer in a pressurized vessel. The mixture is piped out to the spray dryer from the bottom of the tank. A constant pressure of compressed sterilized air is maintained at the Feed vessel.

I do not know if the same principle can be applied for the ceramic slurry. Very much has to do with the viscosity of the slurry.

here we are using the diapharm pump for the slurry feeding but in this case the spray is pulsating , i didnt know about the pressurised vessel for feeding the slurry.exactly how is the arrangement please explain.

AMOL,

Depending on the viscosity of product material, as you know, it has to be under pressure (In the U.S. ASME certified piping) for atomization. Not quite sure what was ment about the vessel unless one would be used as an accummulator to even out the line pulsation. when using a diaphram pump.

WITH THE LIMITED INFORMATION SUPPLIED I WOULD SUGGEST A PROGRESSIVE CAVITY STYLE PUMP.

IF YOU LET ME HAVE THE PROCESS DETAILS: WHAT IS THE FLUID MADE UP FROM, FLOW RATE, PRESSURE AT SPRAY HEAD, FLUID VISCOSITY, PUMP INLET AND OUTLET PIPEWORK AND FLUID TEMP. I CAN OFFER A 'BUDGET' QUOTATION.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED? WE ARE IN THE UK.

Fluid made from the metal oxides ceramic plus PAA binder DI water and the zink oxide,Flow rate needed settable up to 25 liter per hr pressure at spray head 10 bar maximum, fluid viscosity is 120 cps, pump inlet and outlet is pipe made from ss material1/2 inch size, fluid temp is 80 degree cenigrade.please suggest the suitable solution.

AMOL,

In your case I´d forget about pressurising the feed tanks. Using compressed air as a prime mover is highly energy inneficient and costly in capex for your particular application. As few before me have said, it´s either a diaphragm pump or a centrifugal pump. If you already have a diaphragm pump, you can easily eliminate the pulsation by fitting a hydropneumatic suppresor in the high pressure line. Look up supplier Greer Hydroneumatic in the USA.
