4 Stroke IC Engines

09/21/2007 2:20 AM

Please provide me all details on 4 stroke IC Engines as applicable to small aeroplanes. I am trying to study them but few components confuse me...

Thanks.

Which components? A basic 4 cycle motor has a block(housing),crankshaft, rod, cylinder(bore), a head containing combustion chamber, valves, guides, springs, retainers, rocker arms. In some cases the camshaft(vavle actuator) is on the head, sometimes in the block then there are lifters and pushrods. Then there is the ignition source.

Basically with a 4 cycle motor the crank revolves, piston goes down drawing in the air\fuel mixture, piston goes up compresses mixture, spark occurs, explosion occurs, piston goes down, piston goes back up expelling the burnt mixture. repeat.

Of course I did not mention all the components of the ignition source nor the fuel delivery system

And of course a diesel would be somewhat different.

Classic poor post...

Ask specific questions about the 'few components confuse me...'

Do you really want us to waste ages explaining the bits you do know about??

Come on...a little courtesy from you will get some good explanations.

But I for one am not about to dissect an entire engine in words!

I hope that helped.

If you can read and search on the web, there is so much help and these engines in their basic form are so simple, you might be better off in looking for a new interest in life!!

You cannot even define for us what is for you confusing!!!!!

Although a little outdated, "The internal Combustion Engine In Theory and Practice" by Charles Fayettet Taylor (Volumes 1&2) is a text that was used in college. It is excellent, and provides a clear detailed view of the working of 4 stroke IC engines.

I think whats being asked about is a rotary engine. Most small airplanes use them. Unfortunately i know little about them, however if you want a cheap model go get a (85,86, i think) ... Mazda rx7. They used rotaries and it would give you a good basic model to play with.
