Need acid proof metal coating

09/22/2007 10:48 AM

My customer has a phosphur bronze metal part that grips his parts in a acid solution,

he is constantly replacing these grippers due to the acid. Since the grippers must be conductive a plastic type of coating is not acceptable. Since I am a tool engineer and not a metallurgist I seek your help. I was told that a gold coating might be a good choice, is this correct? Is there anything else that would work? Also, they have used grippers made of titanium that worked, but the cost was prohibitive.

Gold may well be just as cost prohibitive --Again, basic info is not supplied -- sounds like a plating bath -- if so what is the solution makeup - specifically what acids and in what concentrations --lets not reinvent the wheel here!

What acid is this?

If sulfuric then Monel, Nickel, Hastelloy C, Alloy20 will give better result...

Carbon is relatively inherent, stands for HCl and many acids, also conductor too...

This is an Electro polishing bath - the solution is 50% sulphuric and 50% hydrochloric.

If it is a plating bath you should know what to use. If it is a cleaning bath that would be different. Like they are asking. what acid and concentration are you using?

And Why Conductive-How conducting-Semi conducting would do?

Optimum Solutions can be found for different situations.

Thik carefully and holistically before you post your reply.

I used SS grippers for Eletro- plating tin-lead on semiconductor devices. How much current they are passing?

Call Specialty Polymer Coatings and ask for Norman Spence. We sell coatings that would stand up to this type of acid and use. Our coatings are used in a variety of uses from the Canadian Coast Guard Ice breakers, to the inside linings of the oil pipelines coming out of Fort McMurray, to lining of wastewater treatment plant tanks, benzine tanks, etc.

My # is 778-231-6027 or 604-514-9711.

It depends on the acid. Gold is resistant to most things. Gold can be electrodeposited from gold cyanide solution (consult a qualified chemist before attempting to do this), though if titanium is 'prohibitive' then gold will be as well.

Here is a useful thing for any Engineer's 'favourites':

Carbon (as graphite) would be a good prospect and worthy of further attention: conductive and largely inert to acids. There may be a pay-off to be made between chemical inertness and frangibility, perhaps?

If this gripper has a strong holding force you would have to worry about any plated finish becoming damaged & exposing the base metal to attack. As mentioned above, alloys like Hastelloy, Monel, Nimonic etc. can be found that will resist acids.

Contact a company called Edlon, Inc. (www.edlon.com) they have facilities in Avondale, PA and Leven Fife, Scotland. They have one coating in particular that may be appropriate for this particular application - black fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) conductive coating.

I had a simelar problem flowing hot HCL gas through vacuum lines. The copper gaskets would quickley break down causing all kinds of process problems. I had a set electroplated with gold and never had a problem again. It should be noted though that the lines themselves were stainless steel (304 or 316, I cant remember which) and they held up for many cycles with minimal corrosion.

Latest info:

The acid composition is 50% phosphoric and 50% sulphuric and this is in an electropolishing tank. please advise proper coating for conductivity and corrosion resistance.
