Welding procedure specification

09/25/2007 6:16 AM

I qualified a procedure to weld a line pipe material API5L X 65 and now i am working on a new project in which all essential variables are the same as previous except that the line pipe material for the new project is API5L x 60. I want to know if i can use the same procedure qualification record of API5L X 65 for that of API5L X 60 material.

Thanks.

AFAIK API 5L X-60 will have lesser strength and more percentage elongation than API 5L X-65.
Since you have already prepared a PQR for API 5L X-65, you know what information you will have to furnish while prepring a PQR for API 5L X-60.
Since WPS is also part of PQR, IMO you may have to modify the new PQR accordingly.
Also check if you have to make any changes to the Thickness Limits and the Testing Requirements of the new PQR

Dear AFAIK thanks for your reply. The problem is that i want to use the procedure qualification record for API5L X 65 for that of API5L X 60 so am asking if the difference in the tensile strenght of the material will allow me to develope the WPS for X-60 using PQR for X-65 since all other esential variables are the same.

Thanks

Good reply, Your WPS would have to encompass the material type and proceedure

Is this being done to meet API 1104 or ASME section IX.

if section IX is being met then nothing more is needed to be done.

If API is being met then check to see if the change is a variable for that strength level

This is a more correct answer; need dimesnsions of the new job as against the old one and strrength values if for API. Otherwise you are OK - i.e. for Sec IX.

Consult API 1104 and ASTM and do not assume. The little change on material size has a significan effect on the material expansivity Characteristics.

Thanks
