Concealed PVC Conduits Running on Wall

09/09/2018 9:30 AM

Hi,

I want to know whether we can run pvc conduits concealed on wall "Horizontally" ?

As per IEEE/ IEC do we have any regulation stating that we should not run conduits horizontally on wall?

I am referring to electrical works for commercial, factories an mall buildings.

Generally speaking it may be allowed where the PVC is embedded in concrete or buried, or supported continuously, mostly in corrosive environments...but generally speaking, mostly no....Conduit is used mostly to protect the wire or cable from damage, and PVC is known to become brittle over time, and in high heat environments it sags...it just doesn't hold up well over time when exposed to the elements....

Or, you could just hang it on the wall, like this:

Code? Code? I don't need no stinking codes!

Nope! It'll still look new 10 years from now.

I've got plenty of conduit clips and concrete screws, if it does sag a little.

..."One of the major concerns when installing long runs of PVC is the amount of length change that can happen due to thermal expansion and contraction. For example, according to Table 352.44 a 100-ft-long run of PVC exposed to a temperature change of approximately 100°F will experience a change in length of about 4 in. Sec. 352.44 requires expansion fittings to be used where the length change in a straight run of PVC installed between securely mounted items is expected to be ¼ in. or greater. If an expansion fitting is not used, as was the case for the installation in this photo, then the PVC will start to bend, buckle, twist, and turn until it eventually self destructs.

Another contributing factor to this self destruction is the lack of supports. Table 352.30 requires PVC sized 1 in. and smaller to be supported every 3 ft."...

You're wasting a lot of time chasing your tail to prove something, not sure what.

The pipe is, by design, not constrained, just securely supported about every 24-30 inches, not 36. There is an expansion joint in the middle of the 22 foot run.

I'm pleased with the installation and the kids like it just fine when they are playing basketball at night.

Then there shouldn't be any problem....this was more for the OP/thread than you....I'm sure you can install a few lights properly....even though I would have installed fewer larger higher lights than those pictured, you probably had your reasons...

Two reasons.

These lights were free, removed to make way for light rail system, and no one wanted them.

The installed height meant the neighbors across the wall couldn't see them, and eliminated any potential light pollution problems of the other neighbors in the direct path because our lot is pie shaped, on a cul-de-sac so the wall lights face away, more of less away, from them.

Whoever voted that OT should kindly explain what is wrong with cable trays!

Thanks!

PVC is not conductive and thus cannot act as "earth ground" for safety.

The electrical regulations pertaining to the country of installation (for example BS7671 in the UK) will state whether it is permitted by way of standard. Deviating from standards is the same as sticking one's head above the proverbial parapet and, in the event of an incident, makes one rather unpopular with the facility's fire insurers and liable to prosecution in the event of injury or death. Another risk is unintended, catastrophic and irreversible discharge from employment, which may not be very desirable.

no one including OP has mentioned how & why you might bury the conduit inside a wall, and no mention of how & where it emerges from the concealed location. It could be similar to buried conduit, except in a wall? That has some horizontal components...
