Roll Up Warehouse Door Woes

09/21/2018 4:19 PM

Problem:

20 foot door was rolled up and did not stop till it ran off the top of the track.

Using non-OSHA approved lift we managed to get the door back into the track and operating properly, for now.

Isn't there supposed to be a stop at the top of the travel to prevent this from happening? Is there a fix, or do I need to call George, the doorman?

I think this is a problem for our member Doorman.

If it's an electric drive, there should be limit switches in the control box for upper and lower stops. At least that is how my doors are set up.

If it's manual then I am not sure how it is supposed to stop except for stop pulling on the darn chain.

If there is an angle at the bottom of the door you could put stops on the top of the track to prevent it from going farther up.

I'ts manual, old and been in use for 30 years, AFIK.

The numerous tenant's workers were just careless, I'm sure. Common sense was not abundant.

I can have it replaced, but it still appears to be serviceable.

The current tenant is old like me, pays in advance, and understands how to keep this from happening again.

It's the next occupant I'm worried about.

If that is the case , have it replaced. Maybe it's reached its service life and a replacement is due. Besides, you have a red barn to think about.

"Common sense was not abundant." ……. Seems to be common when it comes to roll up doors. I just spent $13,000 on a pair of our doors because the hilo driver was pulling something out and went too high and lifted a door with the mast guard, backed out, ripping both doors down along with the block and a half wide column between them and both headers above them.

She said she didn't know what happened, bricks just started to fall for no reason.

The same driver messed up a dock door last year by hanging the 3 foot long hook used to pull the dock plates up, on the track for the door. Then she tried closing the door. Always fun getting a call back to work at 11pm because they can't close up shop do to stupidity.

Unfortunately..... she came with the foundation, she has been with us for almost 40 years, longer then I have been working. I think she would have to burn the building down before management would get rid of her. I just wish they would take her hilo license away.

Along that same line, I just had these installed over three roof drains at another warehouse because fork lift drivers tend to drive forward until the hit something that stops them before they drop a load.

I remember seeing 33/4 inch thick I beam with a hole punched almost all the way through, that was not there the day before. The fork lifts had 3 1/2" diameter circular solid steel forks sharpened to a point like a pencil. Obviously one had hit the beam at a high speed, but no one knew who did it.

I am sure the driver was woken up with that sudden stop.

They could have determined the driver by analyzing the DNA from the brown stain on the seat, and the skin on the steering wheel, but good forklift drivers are hard to find, so they did not pursue it.

The next day the welding shop had to weld a fork back on to a forklift that had broken off at the base.

Find a local lad who knows live from neutral, and has a bit of the clevers. Even with a manual system, a limit switch and a contactor ($30?) and some rewiring should stop this ever happening again.

Thanks, but the mechanical stops need to be reinstalled/replaced.

George will be out next week. He's installed complete doors for us and is reasonable.

And it lasted 30 years, kudos to the people that work there.

when I worked in the ship yard, we had a 20’ door that was beat up, we replaced it and on the first day after it was replaced, a 3rd shift forklift operator raised the door just 4’ short for clearance for the mask on the forklift. Coming into work the next day and seeing the result, one could only shake your head.

1st shift operators worked on project fire drills,

2nd shift was our most productive shift

3rd shift workers.. I’ll just leave that blank…

Not your every day limit switches. Usually they are rotary type for both upper and lower position. I've never adjusted one. Best call is to someone who knows about them.

Clarification. "I" am not going to "do" anything except call George, or not. If I call George, he will come out and either repair the old door or install a new one. If it's a matter of installing a $5.00 stop on the chain, I might do it, or I might not.

I'm just looking for Doorman to say if he thinks it's simple, or not.

The current tenant can deal with the door, because he's old like me and understands mechanical doors.

Thanks!

Well askiss doorman directly, or keep doing nothing and fix it again sometime.

Nobody else can figure out something so difficult.

Hey guys, sorry I’m late.

That’s a rolling or coiling service door. There should be (can’t see in the pic) a bell shaped guide at the top of each track (bellmouth guide). These keep the slats lined up in the track when the door is rolled down, and stops the two angle iron bottom bar from going past.

These bell guides can get loose and fall off, that is my guess here.

The edit system is a bit buggy. Trying to take advantage of the extended edit time, said I had 8 minutes left - cool! A minute or two of editing, submit... sorry, out of time.

Anyway, an image of the suspect piece can be seen in step 22 of these general instructions:

OK! I'll call George and have him come out.

No need to replace the entire door.

Thanks. I knew you would know what was wrong.

George will have his own ladder so I won't have to use the fork lift and a pallet to lift him up to work on the door.

Lynn, you didn't say if this was your warehouse,

I would call George. More than likely he not only has the needed tools, but he might have experience with your system.

Was the dent on the cover housing from reinstall or initial ?

It belongs to an out of state friend. AFAIK, the dent was from a former tenant.

I very likely will call George, just waiting to see if my friend wants a new door installed.

He just spent $30K having this and the adjoining building repainted, so money is not the issue.

Is this the first time it has happened in 30 years?

Something simple just gone wrong. It seems to be an easy job of fixing the limit switches or the door stop - or a notice on the switch that say 'stop when open'

Re: Roll Up Warehouse Door Woes. Carlton Your Doorman. 44]

09/24/2018 10:09 AM

"Hello, this is Carlton Your Doorman", Who Can Turn the World On With Her Smile,....,etc.

In the previous 13 years, it used to happen all the time. But Carlton, formerly at MTM Enterprises, was your Doorman then. His mother collected door stops. That was how Carlton got the job in the first place. That " bellmouth guide" was originally an empty beer can Carlton crammed on a bolt near the top of the track as an emergency replacement for the original, anvil shaped, hard rubber stop. Turned out it worked better. Just start with the door down; the track wheels crush and form the can into the, now iconic, bellmouth shape and voila ! Joy Mangano saw it and produced a monetized version. It was not as famous but made more money due to lower production costs than the twisty-mop.

I was going to use DD, which looks like a HaHa chuckle, but many might mistake that for Dunkin' Donuts. I kinda like the δδ] for this post since it kinda looks like a crushed beer can in a track or Carlton's eyebrows.

He could wire the limit switches to a power source so when made, it sends a "mild" electrical shock through the chain to tell you to stop pulling on it.

Cool beans!

I enjoy complicated, marvelous and wonderful solutions, but sometimes the simple, sensible and mundane solution is the one to roll with.

At the end of the day, it’s just a door, man.

They came in, looked at the door, saw the problem and fixed it.

I asked him if he wanted to quote a new door and he said, "no, there's nothing wrong with this one."

Thanks.

I still really like the limit switch connected to a power source idea, think I will implement in my shop. Maybe I can figure out how to configure it to the fork trucks and prevent our psycho hilo driver from ripping any more walls/doors down.
