Not a Hurricane Leslie

09/25/2018 2:34 PM

This is interesting. The National Hurricane Center https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ has issued their last advisory for post tropical cyclone Leslie. This posting also shows that Leslie should strengthen to hurricane strength Thursday morning. At first I thought there was some sort of a huge mistake here. As I read the NHC discussion and a few Google hits I now understand that Leslie will strengthen by a baroclinic process and then quickly die and can't possibly be more than a brief fish storm.

Take a look at the NHC site. It catches your eye and makes you think.

'Mother Nature' can get "riled-up" at anytime she wants to.

"Tuesday morning Subtropical Depression Leslie has merged with a frontal system moving across the north Atlantic becoming a post-tropical cyclone"

https://katc.com/weather/2018/09/25/leslie-becomes-a-post-tropical-cyclone

"Post Tropical Cyclone" just means former hurricane (or tropical storm). If it had never gained that strength, it wouldn't have a name.

A weather front is just a low-pressure area between two high-pressure areas and exhibits a counter-clockwise circulation (in the Northern Hemisphere). We just have two low-pressure areas merging and pooling their strength.

Another source of information can be found here: https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/

I particularly liked the analyses of Florence, which is still available.

"Fish storm"? Do you mean Sharknado?

Sounds like a good title for a kid's book, "The Little Hurricane That Wasn't".
