5G Infrastructure is Being Fast Tracked

09/27/2018 8:43 AM

I'm pretty excited about the promise of 5G, which should be available in most places in the next 5 years or so. I found this article interesting where the FCC is warning local governments to get rid of the red tape holding up upgrading.

Governments and private groups are opposed to the fast-tracking, asserting that the potential negative effects on health require study. The technology's newness and rapid development is outpacing the abilities of regulators and standards-making bodies to do their jobs.

A couple of years ago IEEE started an effort designed to address knowledge and standards gaps. CR4 folks might be interested to see what that group is doing.

I heard a reporter on USA TV recently and she was saying that on a recent visit to a state (can't remember which one) she drove from top to bottom, about 1400 miles I think and had virtually no internet connection (she said how pleasant it was to be off the grid).

It was to do with the mid term elections and how people voted, was very dependant on their own particular problems, not national issues, which I suppose is pretty standard all over the world. So, I suspect 5G could take a good bit longer for the people struggling to get any type of internet signal.

Some states have made an effort to extend internet access to rural areas, with varying degrees of success since such efforts usually require private companies to string the fiber and manage the service. My own chunk of rural NY State got access to cable modem service (we'd had DSL before) just this past summer. I'd guess that many locations that lack internet access still have radio signals so anyone who was desperate for news could find it. Some of us would happily colonize Mars at this point if that was the only way to avoid hearing the news.

Very nice to see the Welsh dragon, by the way. I'm not Welsh but my dogs are (Welsh terriers). Fortunately they understand English because my attempts to learn Welsh haven't been a great success.

Lol, good point about the news. Yeah, NY has been going after Spectrum for failing to roll out service to rural areas as fast as they had originally promised.

Ran across this today....it seems small towns are banding together to get broadband access cheaper rather than waiting for some one else to do it, and then overcharging them...can't blame them...

CITIES ARE TEAMING UP TO OFFER BROADBAND, AND THE FCC IS MAD

Most of us "Cardiffians" don't speak Welsh, to our shame!

In West Wales it is quite common.

Wow -- so you've heard Welsh spoken as it should be! That 'll' sound is beyond me, among others.

Some, not a lot.

My wife did take her back there 30+ years ago.

Interesting side note: They saw sheep in the countryside with a black (or red) X on each side. Those had been contaminated by fallout from Chernobyl.

jesw55 probably remembers that.

Hi Lyn,

Yes and I think that sales of livestock from that area might still be restricted!

I think that happening brought the world to its senses.

If an "accident" can have those consequences imagine if "we" did it on purpose!!!!!

Best regards,

John
