Success in business often depends on hiring the right person for the job....this means you must be aware of your own abilities and be able to recognize talent and a job well done when you see it, you must recognize quality...

You can't stop cheating...and punishing people just trying to make a buck never works effectively, it just drives it to a black market and higher prices....

This idea to 'crack down' was probably initiated by somebody in the business of producing these papers because the market has collapsed with the advent of the internet and competition....

These "Tail chasing" laws show there is no shortage of ignorance in governance...

'Zackly.

People who cheat will always have their comeuppance. If they cheat their way through college, it won't take long for their first employer to realize they are bringing little to the table. You can only BS your way through things for so long . . .

There is no substitute for sweat and perseverance.

Agreed...A diploma does not guarantee success...It takes ability and motivation and knowledge...When you're asked to design something, you can't just hold up the diploma...

I recently heard an interview with an employer -- forget if the person was in HR or a VP but he was knowledgeable about his company's labor needs -- who would agree with this cartoon. He said that his company has had college graduate applicants who can do math or write a decent sentence. I suppose these graduates assume that ownership of a piece of paper is sufficient and when they find out that they're expected to have some basic skills they are somewhat surprised.

Agreed.

It's pathetic, given that access to information on the internet nowadays is only a few key clicks away, unlike in the olden days of spending long nights in the library. They are only cheating themselves in the long run.

College is a place to learn, not to party for four years and get a certificate at the end. <end of rant>

Here,Here, I never had a degree so I worked hard to be where I ended up,

I started at the bottom, liked it and stayed there, I saw a lot of people on their way up & saw the same ones coming down again.

Are you suggesting that it is OK to buy your diploma using fraud and deception even if it means denying a more well prepared student who may not write a great essay his first job. Why not just cut out all the middle men and hire the highest bidder?

It's NOT OK to cheat! All the ignorance isn't in government.

I don't think SE was condoning cheating, he was simply stating that no matter what you do, unethical people will find ways to cheat.

Think what you will.

This draws a parallel to the current Supreme Court fiasco.

Your attempt to claim the moral high ground here is in vain, I don't think anybody here condones cheating....I just acknowledge that it exists, and that you can't stop it...and while you might get hired based on trumped up qualifications, if you don't have what it takes to do the job, well you'll soon be shown the door....so your premise that unqualified applicants are taking jobs from those who are well qualified, is reductio ad absurdum...and I didn't say government, I said governance....

You're sounding very defensive over a simple statement.

Fortunately it is less of a problem for Engineering courses where there are far fewer essays than, say a business course.

This is really going to upset the apple cart if politicos don't have somebody to provide them with a pre written speech and script to follow as they review their talking points.

Not at all.

They have staff that we pay for, and lobbyists paid for by special interests, to tell them what to say. They also write most laws.

"Politicos" don't do much except raise money for the next election cycle.

Politicians are a completely different story.

I would prefer that they had guidance from advisors knowledgeable in specialised fields of study who each know what they are doing rather than one single persons misguided opinions covering everything. After all no person in charge of so many can possibly know what is best for everyone in all areas and fields of society.

Lets however not make this a political discussion or mention <him>.

This is a good news considering the fact that a lot only depends on essay companies. I wonder how they create a write-up so fast, is it just a plagiarized work?

In many cases the best person for a job, no matter what it is, is the person who got his/her degree from the College of Hard Knocks. There they have seen all or at least most of the complete business and not just a small ivory tower where they can or want to only contribute very little. Most of what they do is done without much knowledge of the complete organization and mission.

Good Luck, Old Salt
