Has anyone performed a study to compare the MPG on a medium duty truck Powered by Diesel Fuel and Compressed Natural Gas?

One cubic meter of gas = 1 liter of diesel +/- for heat value. Maybe you can use your diesel MPG as heat value per M then see how that compares to gas, and run the economics. Put in the equation that gas will make you vehicle totally gutless you will be tempted to put the peddle to the floor and eat a lot of gas that will just go out the tailpipe as unburned fuel and wasted (not on the eff curve). Then gas is dry and no lubricating value for the vales and they will recess in the head = "Valve recession" which means a top end overhaul every few years. A better idea is install a bi-fuel system to your diesel and throttle natural gas into the intake manifold and the diesel is the pilot ignition.

Dear all,

There is a dutch company called NONOX that does extensive development work on Natural gas engines. On their results page you will find the answer to your question.

I worked in instrumenting a Detroit diesel converted engine, and this is the way it was setup.

I think the diesel was also present to make the combustion last a larger number of degrees than NG alone.

The GMC Sierra conversion project was also quite fun.

There are companies that make propane injection for diesels to add extra torque and horsepower much the same way nitrous oxide is used in gasoline burning cars.
