100% Biodiesel is Safe for Internal Combustion Engines?

10/12/2018 7:42 AM

Accidently due to miscommunication our purchasing dept in a plantation bought 100% biodiesel ( Feed from Palm Oil ). We bought them at discounted price because this bulk storage failed the export due to color. All the farm trucks ( > 120 units ), gensets ( 40 to 400 kW ) and 4WD are fueled with almost 100%. Except the 4WD normally get filling all over the road. Later we found that it was a mistake and only shifted to normal diesel after more than year use..!! When quietly did an internal investigation to assess the damage , surprisingly we found that nothing went wrong. We also found that during this and half year there was no significant and abnormal damage to the engine fuel pumps including the fuel distribution tubings. Infact during this period we had the lowest fuel pump and injector repairs. All the trucks are running on off road condition and the average speed is 40KM per hour. Even my 4WD drive normally run one asphalt roads , i hardly felt any power loss. The gensets kW per Lit just marginally lower. All those engines and trucks are fitted with ECU.

It's safe enough for the engine, as the sampling in the original post suggests, though one must bear in mind that in most jurisdictions a tax is levied on road motor fuels. The driver of a vehicle using un-taxed motor fuel, where tax is due on public road use, risks a serious fine and imprisonment when caught; that would not be deemed <...safe...> by law-abiding people.

Replacing dino-diesel with bio-diesel is currently seen as a significant step towards ensuring the future safety of the planet.

Incidentally, the compression-ignition engine was originally developed for use with bio-fuels.

I agree with PWSlack.

Your own assessment says that bio-diesel is OK to run in your off road engines and gensets.

He's also correct that road taxes are probably imposed on fuel sales of on-road vehicles.

Herein the USA red diesel is intended for off-road use tractors and heating, etc and green, or un-dyed, diesel is taxed for on-road use.

The intended use of <...red diesel...>, AKA "gas-oil", in the UK is similar to the USA.

Reportedly, compliance investigation teams can detect 1 droplet of <...red...> in 1000 imperial gallons of Derv fuel and prosecute successfully on that detection level.

Oh! That seems a bit excessive.

The feed stock for bio-diesel is also important as valuable food sources are sometimes used instead of the stalks and chaff from plants.

Here, recently imposed tariffs have caused a escalation of the amount of corn (a valuable food for many) that can be used for motor fuel.

Bio-diesel does not currently have red dye in the UK and therefore it is lawful to use it on British roads, even if home-brew, and many do.
