Galvanic Corrosion Between Copper-Nickle Alloy and Galvanized Steel

10/23/2018 6:10 AM

Hi Everyone,

Is it necessary to use corrosion insulator between Copper-Nickle stub-end and galvanized steel flange of a Lap-joint Flange and the surrounding is humid?

I checked the Galvanic series, according to it, accelerated corrosion will occur. I saw some manufacturers used corrosion insulator and other did not use anything.

Kindly guide me through.

Thanks

It may be a gasket rather than corrosion inhibitor? What are the flange bolts made of?

If they are galvanized and not brass etc.. ?

If I remember right, on offshore North Sea oil jobs we used galvanised+epoxy coated mild steel backing flanges, with insulating sleeves and washers for the bolts. Can't remember bolt material, either galvanised or stainless.

But maybe that's a worse environment than what you have in mind.

You need protection., or very low/no humidity. Better safe than sorry.

Once upon a time (even if no longer), editorial accuracy was essential in engineering.

Once upon a time, editorial accuracy was essential in all printed material...

...and I taught physics and electronics, not English!

At 60 I would have spelled it wrong too. Actually, historic documents show many famous and influential people, generals, etc., misspelling quite often followed by (sic) spelling incorrect; their secretaries often times being no better than Spell Check evidently.

Even He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has a name. He just doesn't want to be bothered with all that adulation that comes with notoriety.

"...adulation that comes with noteriety..."

.

Hmmm. Sounds like a 'quintessential... tragedy'.

I tend to be a stickler for proper spelling. When you grew up in the 1940's, kids were taught to dot their i's and cross their t's. That has carried forward to today. I hate to watch how the education system has fallen. It is failing in producing educated kids. This I believe is not the case in most European and Asian countries, where education is regarded as a most important aspect of a person's life. It used to be we were judged by our ability to speak and write well. If we spoke and wrote well, we were respected, but if education was lacking, you were left by the side of the road while those more educated progressed to higher levels of society.

"... kids were taught to dot their i's and cross their t's. ..."

.

That's become old hat. Now, mostly, they cross their eyes and dot their 't's.
