Verizon 5G Home

10/29/2018 7:41 AM

Hi,

i'm a hobbyist and wondering about verizon 5G home. How it works, what equipment it uses and how I would go about replicating the service for my own open source purposes.

Can anyone of knowledge knows what hardware parts are involved?

Thanks,

Jason

Welcome to the forum. Now explain your question?

If you can't answer the most basic questions you've provided then you can't possibly replicate them for your own open source purposes.

What open source project are you dreaming of?

5G is a cell phone communication protocol. The 5G network itself is the responsibility of the communications company. What a hobbyist can do is install their own wired or wireless network using Ethernet or WiFi with at least one node tied into their 5G cell phone provider.

Verizon 5G Home is not really 5G, it's just a gimmick that uses some 5G components for advertising and sales promotions....

https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/2/17927712/verizon-5g-home-internet-real-speed-meaning

..."5G is the fifth generation of cellular mobile communications. It succeeds the 4G (LTE/WiMax), 3G (UMTS) and 2G (GSM) systems. 5G performance targets include high data rate, reduced latency, energy saving, cost reduction, higher system capacity, and massive device connectivity. The first phase of 5G specifications in Release-15 will be completed by March 2019, to accommodate early commercial deployment. The second phase in Release-16 is expected to be completed by March 2020, for submission to the ITU as a candidate IMT-2020 technology. [1]

The ITU IMT-2020 standard provides for speeds up to 20 gigabits per second and has only been demonstrated with millimeter waves of 15 gigahertz and higher frequency. The more recent 3GPP standard includes any network using the NR (New Radio) software. 5G New Radio can include lower frequencies, from 600 MHz to 6 GHz. However, the speeds in these lower frequencies are only modestly higher than new 4G systems, estimated at 15% to 50% faster.[2] "...

So we won't see 5G for a few more years...at least....

5g is affecting our frogs!

So you want to call home and start the oven, scan the fridge and have a script that places online grocery orders? Remotely let the dog out, and monitor barking?

Your imagination is the limit; here's some background: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8011536

Here's a few receivers: https://www.dhgate.com/wholesale/5g+receiver.html
