How to get/machine the Groove angle for banded belts B?

09/30/2007 5:24 AM

I need to remachine a set of pulleys that use Banded belts 5 x B.

1. How to get the groove angle according the pulley diameter?

2. How to get a good machining on a conventional lathe?

Who can help me?

Thanks

Parker Hydraulics have a set of pulley groove gauges simple and free ,similar to a thread gauge that will accurately identify and gives the angle and depth of all the common configurations .

Any belt supplier will have the same devise .

It depends (as usual) on many things. There are gages available. You can also cut a template, depending on your accuracy needed, from the existing pulley or such.

It is the last part that is my concern:

How to get a good machining on a conventional lathe?

There is an old text titled "Machine Tool Practices" that is great.

What is your workpiece, aluminum, cast, molybdenum? Are you grinding your own tools?

Seriously what is your present skill level. I, and many others on this forum, have exceptional machining skills. I assume by conventional you mean manual. (conventional in machining terms is the counterpart to climb milling). Manaual machining is rich with skills, tricks and methods that take many years to hone and perfect. If you want some good advice make sure to ask a good question.

As it stands now I will answer like this. To cut a groove; turn the lathe on in low gear reverse and grab a 1/2" round file backwards and get at it.

Rarely, just ever so occassionally someone does or says something that surprises me. This one almost surprised me. But I've been hit by bigger and laughed!

The pulleys are: driver - cast iron and 150 OD; driven -aluminium and 325 mm OD; The belt is a Banded Belt with 5 belts, profile B.

Is this enough? That's what I have

With a "B" series belt the angle of the cut will be one of three angles according to sheave pitch diameter.

Pitch dia. 3.6"-4.59"=32 degrees

Pitch dia. 4.60"-7.0"=34 degrees

Pitch dia. 7.0" and above=38 degrees.

Sorry--inches only-did not take time to convert to metric

On a light lathe you quite often get chattering with a full profile tool. I like to use a ground tool like a parting tool only a bit more robust and se the topslide to the correct angle for each side. I cut a square groove and then machine each side using the topslide.

Yeah to that. I will rough in with a parting tool leaving some very small steps and finish with a small full radius (ground on a 3/16 1/8 partiing tool). Actually manipulating both axes to a circular profile. A final clean up with the ol' file and some sand paper gets me there. With patience and tooling I can get circular grooves around 220 degrees full.

Well at least I used to. Been a while. A long while a that.

Oh, it's a V-belt. Groovy, that makes things easy.

I really should pay more attention. Maybe that's why he called me a d*%k head.
