Affordable biomass pellet machine needed

01/02/2006 5:13 PM

Biomass pellets for pellet stoves are in short supply. The Pellet Institute says it is a short term problem.

Pellet machines start at about $350,000. What is needed is a low tech pellet machine that will enable small entrepreneurs to produce and market pellets.

Pellets can be made of any biomass that will burn efficiently and cleanly in pellet stoves. The price competition is the corn kernel. It is a natural pellet, and can be burned in many pellet or multifuel stoves. Corn normally sells for under $2.00 a bushel. It is the lowest priced way to heat a home.

An affordable pellet machine would enable any farmer or other entrepreneur to market pellets made from crop residue, or grasses, wood byproducts etc. The more biomass heat is used, the less demand for natural gas and fuel oil. This depresses price gouging and moves toward energy independence.

In a half hearted attempt, I was able to produce wood pellets from sawdust (free from my local sawmill) with a punch and die on a table top punch press. The sawdust surrounded the punch over the die and repeatedly forced it into the die. The die hole was slightly tapered.

there may be one out there

I lived in the Yukon Territory of Canada until 8 yrs ago. I remember A company there that had a mobile pelletizing plant on a low-boy tractor trailer. They went to woodlots and pelletized the scraps for people. They were a little larger than the pellets I see down here tho. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the company. Or the name on the rig.

What`s inside de pellet?

What ingredients you need to mix?... i don`t think we are talking of wood here ...

probably it has to become a pasta ... mixed with something then dryed ....

what`s inside?

I agree completely, i am a manufacture of small wood chip and sawdust heating systems, many of my customers are have a hard time to find proper fuel. I would get involved in the wood pellet making if it was affordable for me to set up. I am in a heavy wood part of the country and can get lots of unusable wood that is going to waste after they cut the best down. I can also burn corn and this is my next alternative. Any one can reply to my email tilman@nb.aibn.com

hello all,

I come from Northeastern China, Where is one of the biggest wood processing region in China, main wood speice is pine wood and beechwood from local montain, there are over 40 wood saw mills within 15 minutes driving distance, the roughly estimated quantity of sawdust sawmills are over 200 cubic meter per day.currently the sawdust are do as material for charcoal, what important is there are NO factory manufactuering wood pellet now, I think I have the advantage if I go into wood pellet business. am I right?

I was a export manager, I have noticed the wood pellet late 2006, and planning to set up a company to procession saw dust into wood pellet now, but I do not know where to buy the processing line with high efficiency and low price, I donot mind if it is a second hand production line.

I`d like to have you advices if some one knows about wood pellet machine and method of processing.

thanks all

Regarding the question about small-scale pellet mills, California Pellet Mills do one intended for lab use which can sit on a table top. PelletPros's also do some which are manufactured in China, but sold in the NE USA. PS, if you ever get around to making some pellets, you can list them free on www.PelletBase.com !

I located in one of the biggest forestry region in northeast china, where there are over 40 saw mills within 15 minutes driving, the roughly estimated sawdust is over 250 cubic meter per day, currently there mainly used for briquette(charcoal) manufactuer.so the raw material for wood pellet pressing is no problem! there are medium-size and small sized wood pellet plants in China, they use local simple machinery and technology, the machinery originally desigend for animal fodder production, so the quality suffer. In my export manger carrer, I understand quality standard is critical for a long term business, so I expecting the processing line and end product must pass DIN and other relavent standard. my primarily idea is to set up a plant of my own if it is affordable, but I have noticed the wood pellet making machine from EU are expensive and for big plant. wherer to buy small or medial-zised plant which can pass DIN quality standard is critical. The othe choice is I switch to supply sawdust to you if possible. there are may containers sawdust shipped to japan and sourth korea every week for mushroom growth. but forturnaly, the best part for wood pellet processing, the pine wood sawdust is only for charcoal for the time being.and daily quantity is very considerable.I can set up a condenser packing plant to pack and ship pine and beech wood saw dust to you. I do not know if this workable?

Let me have your best advice. Kind Regards, Zhenyu Qiu fshongtai@yahoo.com.cn

Hello Zhenyu,

My name is Paul King and I represent a UK Company, Rainbow Woodchips UK Limited (rainbowwoodchips.com). We are continuously developing our product base in recycled wood products. I was interested in your observations and was wondering what is the cost of shipping a 40 foot container to the UK? This for both beech and pine saw dust.

We are also interested in Beech Woodchips in the 6mm - 10mm size range. We call them Nuggets. I was wondering if such a product is available?

I would be very gratefull for your candid reply.

Regards,

Paul King

Hi David,

Because of my poor English I don't undestand what means S 120K US. I am interested to know if we can make pellets with olive cake. So I want to ask what can be done with the question of high moisture content of cake (about 40%) and the possible environmental usnuitability of cake-pellet burning.

Please note that in my country there is a huge yearly production of cake, which is a big headach for the oil producers

thanking you

Hello

My name is Ralph Andrew Kessler, I feel the same way. I am a tool and Die maker, retired

but I see a lot of Bio Mass wasted.I have been thinking of a way to perhaps fill the open

niche and maybe fill and accomplish a couple of areas. As a tool and die maker I also did

design work, including precess control and planning. Be nice if communication could led

to a new lower cost and a little less capacity. Interesting??????????????????

Hi there. I have persuaded a pellet machine manufacturer in the UK that there is a market for a small-scale (20-30Kg per hour) portable plant for making biomass pellets. They expect that they can turn it out for around $15,000 US ex works. suitable for plugging into a domestic electricity supply. They are designing a proptotoype from their extensive knowledge of pelleting equipment. available summer 2010 I think. watch this space!

Check out HiTech Agro at their U.S. location in Minneapolis. They are based in India and have more than 300 hundred installations. I saw a presentation by them at a conference and they are quite experienced and have a patented die technology that is unique. They have smaller sized pellet and briquette mills that are well suited to farmers and their equipment has been tested by an organization called AURI. www.hitechagro.org

many thanks for the link. seems similar technology to ours, no prices of equipment of course. however, the idea of a smaller semi-automatic plant (or larger to suit anyone's requirements) is only part of the story. having local ability to supply and technical support is fundamental. Thanks for info.

our pelletizer mainly make the feedstuff pellets from more grains powder or agriculture straw. With the biomass fuel become more popular, we improved the main parts, which is more suitable for making the sawdust pellets better. Now it could process more kinds of sawdust, paddy straw, sunflower stalk, hulls, forestry wastes, wood chips, chemical waste and many other wastes or solid powder materials.

It's working principle:

The raw material is under dried condition, which is compressed, and formed into small eraser-sized bits, the final pellets is clean, pleasant and smooth, and its density is more than 1.0.

The Diameter of final size is 6,8,10,12mm for the sawdust pellet , and 2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, etc. for animals food .

9PK-150 pellet machine with belt

MOQ: 1 set

Price: USD 350 (FOB china port)

with 3kw, single phase/3 phase motor,

Capacity: 70-80kg/h

Net weight: 80kg

outside dimension: 800*500*1000 mm Diameter of mould: 150mm

1. The final pellet' length is 2 – 12 mm.

2. Density: 1.0-1.3t/m3.

3. Delivery time: Within 10 days after receipt of payment.

Re: Affordable biomass pellet machine needed

12/07/2010 10:32 AM

Reading through this topic just caused my blood pressure to go through the roof!!

I see that we have some designers/manufacturers of these machines joining in this thread, but none of them mentioned a true biomass machine? One guy even mentioned a 30Kw machine that will produce 1000Kg per hour of biomass pellets; that must be a new world record?!

Pelletizing soft wood to a MPDI of 96%-98% requires between 65Kw – 70Kw per ton, on hard wood we are talking about at least 75Kw- 90Kw per ton. What about die ring throughput, maybe there are some more world records here?

I deal with clients on a daily basis who got smooth talked into buying the wrong pelleting equipment for their application. In the end it is our industry that gets labelled, not the sharks who sold the wrong equipment to the unsuspecting client in the first place.

For anyone interested in purchasing a pellet press: 1. Please do your homework before you buy. 2. Get a legal document drawn up in which the manufacturer guarantees the capacity of the machine, linked to the pellet quality. There is no sense for you as the client in making pellets with a MPDI lower than 91%, but for the pellet mill manufacturer this is a nice little loophole. Low/no quality pellets = low power requirements making his machine look spectacular. Remember the old rule "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"? Same applies for power input versus pellet quality.

Pelleting is the way forward in this energy hungry world of ours and if/when small scale (affordable) pelleting becomes available to the masses the world will be a different place. Methane gas is 26% more harmful than any gas released through the burning process. By turning biomass into fuel pellets instead of allowing it to rot we can thus reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses by up to 26%.

We have been working on various small scale biomass machine designs over years. We even won the South African National Innovation competition in 2004 with a coal dust pelleting concept, but we have not yet been able to produce a small scale machine that is capable of producing biomass pellets at or near a 0% carbon footprint.

Maybe I should challenge these other design/manufacturing companies to prove their claims in a controlled lab? There may be a chance that you have "reinvented the wheel" and beat some old companies with mega budgets, design teams and 150 years+ of engineering data like Buhler, CPM, Amandus Kahl to re-invent the pelleting process. I guarantee you, if your claims are true you will not have to work for another day in your life!! So how about it??

Excellent answer BTE, I have spent the last year researching biomass pelleting using agri-waste as a feedstock. I am from a process engineering background and know from experience that you cannot sell a biomass pelleting machine stating the same throughput as you would get using it for animal feed, so 1ton per hour using a 30kw press is absurd. Everything needs to be considered carefully - moisture content needs to be around 14%, grind size prior to pelleting, liquid addition or binder to be used, main feedstock - there are fundamental differences in throughput and quality (above 97% pdi prefererably) in feedstocks that you would consider to be very similar in character. When all things have been considered then you may get around 1 ton per 66kw of power on a larger pellet press (not less than 200kw). This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to designing a pellet plant, you must do your homework before making any decisions! It has taken me several years of animal feed process engineering and a couple of years in biomass processing to understand the differences in the processes.

Hi There. the golden rule for biomass pellet output is 1 kW of power will produce about 10kgs of pellets per hour output. Therefore, 30kW will produce about 280-300kgs per hour in a well-run production line. we have videos on our website of a single 30kW press making 300 kgs per hour. www.ffspelletmills.com

there is a maximum output even if you can increase the motor. Thanks
