Biomass pellets for pellet stoves are in short supply. The Pellet Institute says it is a short term problem.
Pellet machines start at about $350,000. What is needed is a low tech pellet machine that will enable small entrepreneurs to produce and market pellets.
Pellets can be made of any biomass that will burn efficiently and cleanly in pellet stoves. The price competition is the corn kernel. It is a natural pellet, and can be burned in many pellet or multifuel stoves. Corn normally sells for under $2.00 a bushel. It is the lowest priced way to heat a home.
An affordable pellet machine would enable any farmer or other entrepreneur to market pellets made from crop residue, or grasses, wood byproducts etc. The more biomass heat is used, the less demand for natural gas and fuel oil. This depresses price gouging and moves toward energy independence.
